Hi! Im new to this site, but not to AS. I found this site a couple of months ago and found it very interesting reading how other people suffer from AS. Well I'm 26 and have had it since 11, it has come and gone, but when I was 17 it decided to stay. I have had it affect every part of my body, but mostly in the hips moving from left to right, somtimes both. I wont go into too much detail about my AS history, but it has been long and painful. I have to say I do admire the attitude of some of the people on the posts I have read.

Well onto the reason of my post. For the past 4-5 months my hips have gotten really painful to walk, move and sleep. I have been to see the docter, got X-rays, and seen a physio. Last week I saw the specialist and he told me I need hip replacment on both hips. I was really taken back coz in no way did I ever think I would need hip ops at my age. I didnt really ask him the questions I wanted to as I couldnt think straight at the time. I have to wait til next week to see my doctor, I was hoping I could get some info here.

Has anyone here had hip replacements? could u plz share your experience with me.
The specialist said I could be out of hospital the following day after surgery, but what are the recovery times like? he said 1 month, I have read elsewhere they are longer.
Would they double coz im having both hips done?
After recovery will I be able to run, or even play sports like tennis.

Thanks from your time

Hi,

WELCOME

As for your question about hip replacement I believe you will have response from some people who already have this operation.

Take care,
Sinta

Welcome to KAS I am sure you will be getting different responses concerning
hip replacements. My son at age 39 which I thought was very young, had his
first hip replacement. Now both have been replaced. I will PM you about his
recovery time and etc.

Good Luck,

Maxine

Welcome. Do a search for posts by stevec our resident shyster. He has had both hips replaced at an early age and currently half way through getting his replacement of his replacements.

Hey,

Sorry to hear that you need bi lateral hips. I am 32 and have bi lateral hip resurfacing. I had both hips done one year apart. Since you are so young would strongly recommend you check out Resurfacing. Its a new technique still under FDA clinical trial.

On average recovery time is 4-6 weeks. If you have a desk job, you might be able to go back to work in 4 weeks. Most of the time you can start walking without assistance in 6-8 weeks. But then everyone is different.

You would be able to run and play tennis after the surgery, but most of the high impact sports are kind of restricted. But you will defiitely be able to live a normal life.

There is a group called "Surfacehippy" on yahoo for resurfacing. Check that out.

Let me know if you need more info.

All the best.
Raj

Hi there. I am 23 and just had my left hip replaced. I haven't been on this website in a while and it just is such a coincidence that the first time I log on the question I see is about hip replacements. I am at home recovering from the surgery that was on April 12. I almost fell over when the doc said I needed both hips replaced. It still doesn't seem real. As for the pain I was in I'm not anymore. It's just a different kind of pain that I am in now and the great thing is that it will go away. I am going back to work on Tuesday the 26, but I have an easy job that is not in any way physical so that helps. I felt great in the hospital the very same day. It was amazing!!! Good luck to you and all the good things that are to come.

Stacy

My advice DO IT!!! Replace or resurface if possible.

Yes you can play tennis and run afterward as long as your AS doesn't make other parts of your body too sore.

I had my hips done over 20 years ago at 22 and 23 (or so) just re did both of them.

Best thing I did to enjoy my youth despite AS was have my hips replaced. My AS was advanced and I loved tennis, golf andany sports and couldn't participate before the hips. THe older you get with AS the more your spine will get involved and the less benefit you will get from the hip replacement was my logic.

I refer to the surgery as the operation that saved my life. At lease it revived my happy spirit.

Wow thanks for the replies and the warm welcome. I have always been ignorant towards AS and realise if I wasnt then things may be better, I dunno. This site (and also the pain) has led me think differently, probably coz I have never known or spoken to anyone else with AS, due to my ignorance.

I did look through some other posts and found alot of info, damn noobies should search first shouldnt they :P Well there is no doubt I will definetly do it. AS has reduced my self confidence, self esteem and motivation enough. The only worry I had was time, I have just paid off my student overdrafts and credit cards and was about ready to leave my current part time job to kickstart my career. Now the operation will mean I have to put it on hold.

Wow Stacy hip op at 23 and u recovering 2 weeks after, that sounds fantastic, I hope I can recover that quick. Well I really do hope I can play sports again, I still have my football and tennis racket from 10 years ago, lol. I dont think I will have a resurface, I want total replacments and the sooner the better. But thanks for the replies it gives me a bit more confidence about the op.

I found a website in these forums, www.totallyhip.com. Found a link that kinda put me off, it has a link to some other site and there u can watch a 1 hour stream of the hip op. Kinda scary seeing it, I wish I hadnt now, lol. Well when I have the op, I'm gonna ask the surgeons to stick in some silicone implants into my butt, make them look fuller again, I might as well since they are gonna cut me open around that area, lol. Sry couldnt resist :P

Cheers
