If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hello everyone: My wonderful 35 year old husband was just diagnosed with AS. We had never heard of the disease before. He has had chronic back problems for as long as I have known him and iritis four times in past 6 years but we did not know they were connected.
Five months ago the pain hit him worse than it ever has. The workmans comp. DR sent us to an orthopedic surgen, who prescribed complete bedrest. When that didn't work, he said there was nothing more he could do.
Frustrated and out of options we went to our own GP who quickly connected it all and ordered tests which came back positive. So I came to the internet to find more information. That's how I came across KICKAS. You are all wonderful and this site has been such a valuable source to us in our search for answers. I look forword to making many new friends here.
But, I still have a question. My husband has always done heavy labor jobs(He is a trashman). Our doctor says he won't be able to do it much longer. His disease is progressing very quickly. He has recommended a rehabilitation program to retrain him for something less demanding. Do you have ideas or suggestions?

Check with your state employment office they often have programs to retrain people who become occupationaly disabled. I know they have that type of program in Wyoming.

Hi Krystyn, Thanks for being the first to welcome me.
Ok, why is my status still "Lurker"? After joining I thought I would be a "New member".

Connie, Your status changes as you post more. For example, when you have not posted anything, your status is Lurker. After posting once, your status will be New Member... so it should be that right now Take care, Kristin :) ******** Kristin

Welcome Carmen - no answers I'm afraid, just wanted to say Hi Really glad to see you here - my husband is 32 and was diagnosed about 4 years ago - so we're in the same boat - although I must say its a boat crammed full of some of the most wonderful people I've ever (never) met. You might want to check out the No Starch Diet forum - we've just starting trying it - tough but has some very convinced followers. See you around soon Justine
Take care Justine

Hi, Carmen, and welcome! Don't have any easy answers to the career thing, I quit social work and started a home based business doing legal transcripts and that's been perfect for me as I can sit, stand, move around, or whatever. Sometimes there are counselors, though, and tests that indicate where a person's interests lie and that gives a hint as to what might be a good option for a career change, because he can't continue doing heavy lifting without making his condition worse over time. So glad you found this place, it saved my sanity more than once - - although some folks would question whether I had much sanity to begin with Cheryl Dogs hate rainy days too

Carmen: Ditto on what Smed mentioned about your state dept. of rehab .Here in California they helped me with tons of counseling although I did not elect to take any educational benefits.I saw them giving a tuition and books benefits all the way through junior college to some clients. I had to give up being a toolmaker at 36 when I could not stand up infront of machine tools for 8 hour any more .I then was able to work as a technician in the same company where I was able to move around for the next 8 years. When that company moved away two years ago I looked for a more sedentary job at a computer combined with walking around at will as I had fused upand down the spine and wrists. Too much sitting is also bad. It seems from what I have gathered after being on this site for a couple of years a combination of sitting standing and walking is best for the typical case although some us have have had to go to wheel chairs. Welcome Carmen,
I agree with SMED. Either the local employment office or more likely the vocational rehab office.
