Bridge, I totally get what you mean about seeing the pain in Van Gogh's painting. I never would have thought of it that way, but now that you say it ... it's right there. I guess, back then, they took whatever they took for pain and coped. Or not. As the case may be.

I can't imagine doing it, as I have enough trouble coping some days, even with the Remicade. But people have been living with this and other chronic pain since human time began. Probably alot of really snarky people around - and yes, I'd be willing to bet alot of folk turned to their religious beliefs as well, for comfort and to cope.

Many hugs,

Kat

Oh My!

As for the remedies, the first one mentions 'mullet oil'. This was a tad concerning because I always thought a mullet was a bad haircut.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s This almost made me fall out of my chair. Ha Ha Mullet oil If I only knew how much value my long hair could have had. If anyone needs oil from a middle age man with very short receding hair let me know. Ha Ha

Juice the hippo. Dissect the centipede, remove the fat and render to remove impurities.

We're gonna make a fortune! If Van Gogh had had this stuff, I bet he wouldn't have killed himself.

Quite intersting remedies and I am sure there are many of us who have reached a point if we thought it would help we would try it. Having also been a student of Art I have always tried to draw and paint serene scenes for a peaceful effect and have never thought on trying to paint pain. Great idea Bridget I have a blank canvas I have been staring at for months so maybe I will try to capture a moment of pain.

Wouldn't it be cool to marshall our artists here and put an art series together. Maybe call it "Perceptions of Pain", or "A Peace of Pain". Something like that. Use it as a vehicle to educate people about AS, or arthritis in general. That would be truly cool.

I didn't know you are an artist, too, Brent. What medium do you prefer?

Many hugs,

Kat

I found this interesting, too.

As for the remedies, the first one mentions 'mullet oil'. This was a tad concerning because I always thought a mullet was a bad haircut and, frankly, the idea of using oil from the head bearing a bad haircut just seemed a bit far-fetched (not to mention gross). I looked into this and it turns out that 'mullet' is a type of fish. So that was a relief.

To maybe answer your question Karen "I mean, how did people deal with pain back then? " I know that my father, born 1918, diagnosed with AS by military when they refused him for war service in 1938, took nothing more than asprin very occasinally. He was rigid from head to hips, and both hips were set in a half-sitting position following a double hip operation in 1942so that he could walk (with sticks) and sit down.
I well remember my own kids jumping and wriggling on my lap as toddlers and how painful it was for me and I was on meds. How I must have caused him agony when I was young sitting on his lap and wriggling, and yet he never even mentioned it. I asked my Mum when I was suffering a lot whether he talked about pain to her. She said no, he suffered in silence. And from his pinched expression he did suffer.
He died just short of his 49th birthday. He supported his family by working 46 hours a week all his life and was at work the day he died.
So I guess they just grinned and bore it as they had no options, unless you include giving in and starving.
So whenever I begin to feel sorry for mself, I remember my Dad and how I could be with AS.

Regards
Geoff
