Hi, Sue. yes, that's my problem, exactly.

broccoli sounds good. maybe I'll add cauliflower too.
I can kind of handle fresh fermented sauerkraut, or long cooked cabbage. applesauce is okay. I might try the canned pears. why pears? are they less sweet than other foods? everyone mentions raisins.
Thanks for the suggestions!
I think I'll do some liquid protein, too.

Mollyc1i, thank you!
I have some questions:
1. do you get side effects from the colofac?
2. is the cause of not digesting roughage spasms? does it really help?
3. what is the French take on these symptoms/AS? I had a friend yrs ago who showed me a French book about some depression syndrome common to mediterraneans. I never heard of it before or since! they see things a lot differently.

hi illy,

why pears? not really sure, just easy to digest for me.
don't think it has anything to do with "sugar" rather, i think the more ripe fruits and less acidic fruits work best for me.

in general, fruits that did not ripen well and thus tended to be less ripe were the worst (hard to get a nice ripe peach for example). along with anything too acidic (citrus, berries, cranberries...the worst of the lot).

in general, i found cooked, canned, dried to be easier for me than fresh, when things were bad.

a lot of it was trial and error with a food diary in hand.

as for veggies, I believe all the Brassicas (cruciform vegetables) seemed easy to digest. again, trial and error, and keeping notes in a food diary.

also, moderation seemed to be key. when i started to get better, i could eat other fruits and veggies, but had to eat them in a limited amount.

Hi,

i have ulcerative colitis (the uglier side of irritable bowel) and like you i have trouble with fruit and veg.

i absolutely love salad and try to eat it as much as i can but i find when my bowel is on the go(and go and go!!) i have to avoid it at all costs.

my gastro doc said that when things are bad not to eat anything with a skin and to not eat wholegrain bread (although you are on NSD so that is not an issue).

it is such a catch 22 because the foods that are good for AS are not so good for the bowel. aahh!!

hope this helps and i will try and think of more.

Christine

that is a good rule of thumb. now that I think of it, grapes and tomatoes are problematic. apples don't seem to show up again, though, and I eat them with the skin. yes, lettuce is pretty bad and I love it. I take chlorella for my greens instead.

Hi Illy - Your questions.

Colofac: No. No side effects. Colofac works, my absolute life saver. Cannot tell you how fantastic it is - and, no side effects...

Roughage = spasms. For me anyways. Love pretty much all veggies and fruit. But. Hell to pay if I eat em especially veggies, ALL the brassicas and the dreaded potatoes. Sigh. (Visited friends for Sunday lunch today. Errrrr. Yes. Cleaned my plate right up...paid for it since, but TG made it home in time...!!)

France: French doctor said 'Ah yes, normal reaction in AS patients to have gut involvement' when I told her about my gut problems! Over here in the UK, look at you like you are daft, even my super rheumy raised her eyebrows, she is not convinced that diet plays a part, but fortunately is happy for me to manage my own casebook - even to my taking LDN.

Just hope I can get my move to France accomplished. Will be posting on the scenario - tell ya, you couldn't make it up... (Awaiting new keyboard, this one is horrible to use.)

Molly

When I have intestinal problems I make my diet meat and veggies only and test foods out until I find the trouble maker. I've discovered that all nuts and seeds seem to cause problems. I also suspect coconut and chocolate. Lately eggs seem suspicious too. *sigh*
