You will find most processed foods also contain starch. Even it is not listed, depending on the small % of starch in the product, they may not list it as an ingredient. Yet it is enough to make us flare. For example shredded cheese has starch added to it to keep it from sticking, yet it is not listed on the ingredients. So, if you can tolerate dairy and eat it, don't order cheese while eating out, it is most likely pre-package or pre-shredded, or ask if they shred it fresh on the premises.

Best to stay away from ALL processed foods, supplements, etc. Stick to whole foods, fresh from the butcher or produce market. (Organic has more nutrients and I find they taste better.) Use iodine to test for starch in certain veggies or fruits that are not ripe.

I see.. Now I just went to Wendy's I did not pack a lunch because I was not sure what to get while I was at the store yesterday.. I chose a small chili, seemed good other than the few beans they put in there (is that bad) and a oriental Chicken Salad I did not put the crunchy things on it just the Almonds? I don't know if it was a the best chioce but I thought it better than a burger with the bread and Fries.. I will get it. thanks for the support here.. I do want to try it.. If anything it will help with the 30+ lbs I have gained since April when my Achilles tendons went out on me and had to be bound up in a boot forever. I still only have permisson to use a bike and swim for exercise. And quite frankly I hurt so bad at the moment that any amount of walking even for a short time has me debilitated..

Hi Tamara,

Carbs does not equal Starch.... complex carbs generally equals starch. I think if you are reading labels, Bilko would always say to subtract Total Sugar from Total Carbs... difference would approximate Starch content.

However... I do not read a lot of labels as I do not eat a lot of processed foods. From working for processed food manufacturer, I know there is a lot of junk added to save money. I also believe this is where a lot of people slip up with NSD.

Hi Tamara,

In Carol Sinclair´s book, she recommends McDonald´s if you need to eat somewhere quickly. I did this at times.... I would buy couple hamburgers and toss the buns and order a salad and toss the salad dressing. Not the most appealing.. but if I was in a hurry and needed something, I could count on this and it never presented me problems.

Eating out in Argentina is much easier than in the States, more grilled foods and salads are excellent here with great variety. These are the foods I generally ordered at sit down restaurants (grilled meat and/or salad without the dressing).

All the information everyone is giving is great. I am lucky in that i already eat as much wholefoods as possible already - we have good choice of organic foods and non medicated meats and loads of local produce. I have not really had many bouts of pain, certainly nothing over a long period of time so it could make it harder to know if I have inadvertantly slipped up in that I may not get the pain or stomach feed back. anyway I resisted banana's with peanut butter when i gave them to the kids, and I have nothad any bread even my beloved rye bread toast for 4 days, I had the ricoota spinach filling minus the pasta that the family ate last night, so one day at a time.

Just thought I'd throw in something I learned this summer on vacation: subway, or sub type places will throw all the sub "fillings" in a bowl for you rather than the bun. You get more that way than a typical salad (meats etc).

I still think the bun-free protein burger at In-N-Out Burger is the best thing that ever existed though!

Hi Megan,

Yes... love Subway as well with salad. Done this a few times.

BTW - they do have McDonalds (no surprise), Subway and Burger King all in Argentina where I live now. That is it for American fast food chains where I live, but I have seen one TGIF in Buenos Aires.

There have been posts on this forum on coconut flour in the past. Use the Forum Search tool (link is at top of the page)

Almond flour.. buy already ground have to shop around till you find a good source. Usually middle eastern grocers will carry it at the best price.
