If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

this is just a suggestion. don't take it too seriously. since some non starchy foods have been causing you problems e.g chocolate, mince etc then you could try for some negative reinforcement by eating something that is a relatively "safe" food that contains starch like kumara. as far as a know kumara doesn't have anything bad in it that could cause problems apart from starch. dice some kumara up and boil it for 20mins. try a few small pieces. if you react to it then starch is your enemy. if you don't react then maybe starch isn't the most important thing to avoid in your diet.

not so much for the NSD/LSD, but rather when i first developed gastritis and certain foods were really bothering me and others were actually soothing, but i didn't know which was which cause i'd eat a meal of a bunch of things, and sometimes feel a lot better, and other times a lot worse.
so i started keeping a food / symptom diary and only by looking back on that did i know the things that were perfectly safe, and the things that were bad.
if that hadn't worked, then it would have had to have been similar to allergy elimination diets, where you eat only 2 or 3 foods you know you can eat, make sure you feel ok, and then slowly add in one thing at a time. this works well for allergies when you just don't know what the culprits are.
feel better, figuring out diet can be challenging for sure!

What do stomach noises really mean? I have AS (obviously) and started getting IBS too. But what does it really mean when your stomach makes noises? I sometimes get gut pain and AS symptoms afterwards.
I was feeling OK today, then i ate grapes and coconut slice (in the nsd recipe section), had a bath, then shortly after i had stomach noises and my AS now feels worse. Help?
thanks Seb, do you know what IBS means? Let a doctor say what you suffer or what you don't. On the other hand until then just avoid the foods you think they cause gut pain.
34. Some rheumys say AS stage 1-2 some others say USpA Also UC - rectocolitis. UC curently in remission since feb 2011. AS/USpA remission march-aug 2011. Flare - sept-nov 2011 (antibiotics). Remission now... Modified NSD/SCD. Cook your own ! ____________________________________________________________ Mesalazine-Salofalk 500 mg/day And the list of my medication has become verry short after some years on this diet

Hi Seb, no no no.....don't panic and give up fruit and sugar just yet! That definately is depressing and most probably not necessary.
If Jon eats a large quantity of grapes in one go sometimes he will get the squirts afterwards...sorry if that's too much info! haha.
Maybe just pace yourself with the grapes and also be sure to rinse them well before eating as they are usually sprayed with pesticides etc.

Thanks Chelsea,
This cheers me up a bit. I'll make sure to wash them properly and not eat as many!

I am with Chelsea.
A few months ago I was literally living on salad, fish and still flaring. I had eliminated eggs, fruit and everything else for a week or so...yet I felt no different.
I am fast approaching 6 months on the diet, 5 months without dairy. I eat dark chocolate, I drink beer and I love blueberries and prunes. Yesterday I introduced avocado...no reaction so far.
What am I saying? Be patient. Keep it simple but you may simply be experiencing "mechanical" pains (physical damage sustained through AS that is still healing). I think that is what was happening to me.
I wrote a post and Chelsea suggested that I hold fire and be patient before dismissing whole ranges of food.
The result? I have just got rid of a really minor flare after eating homemade sauerkraut but I had experienced very little in the way of AS pain for a while.
Summary
Maybe its not the food. Maybe it is. Stick NSD / no dairy and review in a couple of months if you are still flaring.
Good luck and well done for what you have achieved so far.
Keith

Hello Seb,
Too much sugar can lead to candidas... I think it is much easier to develop on this diet as we may replace starch with too much sugar.
I have had 3 episodes of candidas... I eat a lot of raisons on diet... but not an issue. If I add honey and/or vinegar on regular basis as well I have always run into candidas issues. This pain feels just like my AS pain.
To get rid of candidas I come off all sugar for couple of weeks, take natural garlic twice daily and sometimes orgeno oil.
As for grapes... I love them, but agree to many cause me stomach noises and some discomfort in intestines. In moderation I have no issues.
Tim

I would be careful making a blanket statment blaming sugar based on one experience. Mabe some of the food had some bacteria on it.
I too have had "gut noise" and irritable bowel symptoms but it was based on my wheat allergy. If I dont eat wheat I have no issues.

Dried Cherries were causing lots of stomache noises in me. I did find that sugar (even fruit sugar) was sabotaging my nsd efforts. I bought low sugar juice (less than 10 grams per cup) and started eating lower sugar fruits, like prunes and berries (but not very many). Also switched to dark chocolate covered strawberries as an occasional indulgence. Before I was drinking lots of fresh orange juice, yumm! Tons of grapes, a little hard cheese. Not any more. So sorry Seb, you are young and thin so I HOPE this is not the case with you. I have some extra pounds to lose so not a big deal with me. I DID have withdrawal from the fruit sugar same as starch though. I'm really good at being addicted to stuff that is bad for me!! Well my diet is very boring so I will either die of AS complications or I'll die from dullness!! I just found out my wrist and ribs are fused/fusing and that is scary freaking crap to me, so dull I will be if it means I can slow down the spondy monster! Take Care, Donette
