Hi everyone, been quite a while for me. Arthritis has been very mellow for over a year now. I have been suffering with Lower abdominal pain from possibly a parasite (amoeba coli). About 4 days into taking metronidazole, 500 mg 3x per day I got a flare up of my uveitis that has been dormant over 4 years.

I wonder if it is a die off reaction to some critters, or maybe my immune system being freed up from this critter is now free to attack me again?

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
thanks for any kind of thoughts you might have.
Brian

hi brian:

that's a very interesting theory about your body being freed up to attack you instead of the parasite/bug.

were you showing any symptoms of uveitis before you started the metronidazole? usually my uveitis symptoms starts with a slight irritation for a week so i think it's just irritated eyes, before the full blown redness and intense pain shows itself.

leslie

Hi Brian,
I'm sorry to hear you had a flare up after 4 years. How frustrating!! My last flare up was in November and while I haven't exactly been flare free in recent years it was by far the most aggressive flare to date. I had the flu or knock em out level cold and as it eased up the iritis kicked in. It was weird to see how they seemed to go hand in hand. My opthamologist felt that it very well could have been that my immune system was all fired up from fighting off the illness that it just translated into a nasty flare. Maybe if this is an actual thing we could do some precautionary drops when coming off an illness ... hmmm.
I hope your flare doesn't last too long and you can have many quiet years ahead!

Thank's for the post. This is something I will have to look out for now. I didn't have a flare of Uveitis for a couple of year's and then wham, took a couple of month's of good old Lotemax, dilating drop's and prednisone. Ankles and feet were tore up too. Only one month from getting the green flag and I had it again. I am going to be on the look now. Great question.

Pea

Hope it doesn't last long.

Thanks for the responses, this flare began with one immediate sharp pain in the eye. Ever since it has been the typical on and off "aching eye" feeling with a blurry vision when its more intense.

deniD my flare looks like an extremely bloodshot eye at its worst and no visual indication for most of the time. If you suspect uveitis go to Doc immediately as it can damage vision quickly.

I agree that some precautionary drop during certain times of healing is a good idea for the future.

I was thinking of Helminthic therapy when I theorized about the parasite holding off my symptoms. This is where you intentionally get a hook or whip worm in your digestive tract to combat the symptoms of various autoimmune diseases.
