ON a particularly disgruntled day when all was hurting and a total stranger happened to be about the tneth person to ask me that day, what was wrong with me,

I responded to that rather tough and large looking soul, Did you ever hop on your motorcycle and get 'er up to about 85-90 and just lose control and smash as you laid it down into a brick wall. He obviously answered NO. I said I haven't either but I'm sure it would feel a slight bit better than how I feel. Never told him I had AS and it accurately described how I felt that day.

The best mental image and explanation for me since my AS is "classic" male progression, if there is such a thing. That is it started in my hips and has ascended my spine and into shoulders and neck, is that there is a thorn filled vine with python like skills of contraction growing up my spine. The thorns are always there but on the day which that vine contracts in a python like convulsion. My eyes pop.

At times over the past year, it's been like having someone walking behind me and stabbing me between the shoulder blades everytime I make a quick movement. And if I sneeze or cough, that person runs the knife all the way through my ribs.

AS symptoms started 1991. Official dx in 2006 with HLA-B27+, fused SIJ, bone spurs in back, extreme rib/hip pain, and other family with SpA. Started Enbrel in 2006 with good results, but stopped in 2010 due to nerve damage (MS) from it. Getting good results with no-starch diet since 2011.

No Way! I thought that I was the only person in the world that had (often and severely) injured themself just by sneezing! People tease me all the time because I will brace myself like an earthquake victim,if I feel a sneeze brewing!grin

No joke-when I read this, I let out one of those "throw your head back/laugh out loud" and scare everybody in the room laughs. Now they're all looking at me crazy and want to know what could possibly be that funny, But I told them it was an "AS" thing...they wouldn't understand. hee hee

"You want,if possible-and there is no more insane "if possible"-to abolish suffering. And we? It really seems that we would rather have it higher and worse than ever. Well-being as you understand it-that is no goal, that seems to us an end,a state that soon makes man ridiculous and contemptible-that makes his destruction desirable. The discipline of suffering,of great suffering-do you not know that only this discipline has created all enhancements of man so far?" ~ ~Friedrick Nietzsche~

I'm very used to the large-hoofed-animal-kicking-me-in-the-butt feeling and just recently got to know the anaconda-squeezing-my-innards! The steel-rod-in-the-back is the one i have the hardest finding words for! I'm so thankful all of you understand..
