Yesterday a bunch of people from work were going to lunch. I decided to skip my workout, and go to lunch with them. While at lunch the guy who checks people in at Gold's gym came by, and said "Hello shouldn't you be at the gym." Feeling guilty I went to the gym at 8:00 PM last night. I did 31 minutes on the elliptical.

I plan to run the Marine Corps Marathon at the end of October.

Since I have started training, my AS symptoms have become greatly reduced around running days, which is most of the week. I still feel it each Monday when I have a 2 day break from running, but overall I can't complain. My speed is improving - now at an 8:35 mile pace. I'm using the Higdon training program and progressing my milage gradually up to 20 just before race week. I am currently at 12 miles for my long run per week. I just finished a fall back week in the training program, just 7 miles for my long run but I ran it without a single break and finished in 1 hour. I am starting to think finishing the marathon under 4 hours will be doable. My original goal was just to be able to run it period.

I used to run regularly back before my AS started, when I gave it all up. I'm just happy to find that I can still do it, I was just afraid to try again.

This is a bucket list item for me and I figured I'll have no better opportunity than right now, before skeletal damage starts.

Inflammator: good luck with the marathon and training; sounds like its going well. smile

Thursday: Walked 1.5 mile, 30 minutes.

Friday: Walked around a poster session of an undergrad research symposium all afternoon.

Saturday: shopping and errands, on my feet for about 5 hours straight.

Sunday: Took a 1 mile walk before dinner.

Sounds like you are doing great. Running has really helped me with my AS problems. In 1988 my brother challenged me to run a 10K with him. The AS pains were so reduced while training that I never stopped running. My wife made me promise no more marathons after running St George in 2011. It was hot, and the heat flares up the MS. I just run 1/2 marathons now. Have fun with it.

Thanks. Yeah I basically have almost no or minimal AS pains for about 4-5 days a week now, even with the massive carb increase. The greatest improvements are in my SI joint area. At first I had a lot of issues with pain at the bottom of my feet as well as making deep breaths and limited chest expansion. Now those issues seem to be disappearing too. My flexibility is much better. Beats the daily pain I had before. I was worried that after I run it, I will need to keep running to feel this good. I guess I'm not the only one.

Short run today: 3.2 miles
Pace: 8:07 per mile

Good Job Steve!! I am stuck at walking my 1/2 mile until I see the surgeon next week. I feel a little strange mentioning my exercise when I read all of yours.

Inflammator...I am glad you are feeling better. Our son-in-law with AS went from barely limping around to running Marathons and doing a couple of triathons. He has backed off to 1/2 marathons but he rides his bike, swims or runs faithfully every a.m. early before work. Enbrel was a life saver for him plus he is aware of every bite that he eats.
