well done with the ops smile

I am interested in how you managed/got around with your THRs

the vast majority of folk who have had this op take many months to "lose the limp" or regain strength in the operated leg. Your first operated leg will now need to be the strong leg, in one months time, in order to support the second THR!

were you bed bound for a spell and were your THRs cemented in?

I use super glue myself, with a dash of filler just to get rid of any gaps.

Suoer glue quite cheap, though perhaps not as reliable as medical cement but the price reduction is super (like the glue) and of course, if things go wrong, if the guarantee is carefully worded, then the customer usually doesn't have a leg to stand on..!

Recovery time depends on your physical condition pre op.I had the uncemented titanium hip replacement done at the end of feb.Its al metal with a plastic cup that separated the metal. When it's time for e revision, they just take out the cup with a small incision and put in the new cup.Nothing near as complicated as the THR.
I went back to work 12 weeks post op and I'm a roofer.my limp was gone after about 4-5 months.
My docs told me the same thing as the rest.Wait as long as you can.But when my other side is ready I won't hesitate for the THR.I won't live that extra 3 years in pain.
My friend had both done and their was a 3 month gap in between surgerys.

my surgeon mentioned that to me......titanium, plastic cup and a ceramic ball...I think that's what he said, I was too busy not listening when he spoke to me smile

you ever get that? a Doc or surgeon or nurse or someone is busy explaining the facts to you and when you get outside/home you remember very little of the conversation, LOL

if it's important I always take my wife with me to gather and REMEMBER the facts.....all it takes is for a Doc to say the "wrong" thing and off goes my head to la la land

eh?

Wendy, both of mine were completely shot when I had them replaced, and as I've said many times, having them replaced was the smartest, best thing I've ever done. From the minute I woke up after surgery, I was immediately in far less pain than I had been beforehand. Pain loss is constant to this day, and rehab went as well as it possibly could have. Cannot recommend getting them done enough, especially if you are a candidate for the new less intrusive method of doing the surgery (my mom had one hip replaced that way and was out of the hospital in two days and was pain-free and back to normal within a month).

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Wendy,

What were your symptoms? My thigh bones have been really hurting and waking me up every morning at about 5:00 in the morning. It stops hurting but will sometimes hurt through the day unless I have been sitting for a long time leaning on them. I have to see my Rheumatologist next month about it so I wondered how bad yours got before they decided to do surgery. Thank's.

I'm very interested in the idea of making it easy to do a revision in the future. How long do you think a reasonably healthy person would need to be off from an office style job, ie not clambering around on a roof?

Thanks for your help, Underhill

Hi Brad,
I've heard from others that the pain after surgery was less than the pain of the damaged hip. I'm certainly hoping that's true. As you got both of yours done, how long a gap did you have between surgeries?

Tanks for the encouragement.
