Though I don't have the issues you do with my neck / throat, at least for me, the upper endoscopy was no big deal. I just simply fasted, the doctor gave me the drugs, did the procedure, and I didn't remember a thing. Easy, peasy. And nice to be assured it wasn't an ulcer.

More recently, I stopped dairy, which it turns out I was really allergic to; that helped me stomach (and bowels) quite a bit. But starting the Humira helped a huge amount.

Also, my intestines. When just average bad, I get constipated, more than one should with all the fiber, water, exercise I do. When its really bad though, I stop digesting my food, I get terrible diarrhea with undigested food in it. Psyllium had helped in the past. Now on Humira, my bowels have been really good. Excellent the first week after the shot, Average the second week. I don't think I probably had a normal bowel movement most of my life, until I went on Humira.

But as bad as my symptoms were in the past, all they every found was "inflammation and crohn's like ulcers in my ileum", no crohn's, no UC, no IBD. So "just inflammation" can give terrible symptoms.

But if you do have IBD, the same drugs that help the AS can do wonders on IBD as well.

For me that's the biologic, for my stepfather with crohns, that's been Asacol all these years.

As for the blood, if its a small amount and bright red, it could just simply be hemorrhoids; annoying, a bit painful, but not too serious if they aren't too bad. A common thing for those of us that fluctuate between constipation and diarrhea. All those years of constipation will do that to us.

I could say "try to relax", but I know that's easier said than done. Let the doctor do the upper and lower endoscopies and then based on what he finds, treat you.

There are options out there.

Thinking good thoughts for you. smile

Sue
they did not knock you out for the procedure, they just sedated you?

Yeh, I know. That's why I simply said, "the doctor gave me the drugs, did the procedure, and I didn't remember a thing"…….the "sedation" messes with the short term memory so you don't remember anything…..you think you've gone to sleep, even though you haven't…….

Sue - depends on 'what' they gave you. I was given midazolam and pethidine, by intravenous. I remember every second of the procedure ! Every bit of pain, and no, the pethidine did not work ! And, I still remember every bit of it. But, would still go for sedation again. Prefer to 'know' what they are up to.

I prefer not to know smile

Prior to LDN, they gave me the more standard:

narcotic analgesic(painkiller) Demerol(meperidine)
and a benzodiazepine(sedative/hypnotic)-Versed(midazolam)

After LDN, they gave me propofol. They needed an anesthesiologist to administer it, but not a problem for me. My GI doc likes it better, and after getting it, can see why: "put me out" so to speak faster, and "woke" from it faster too. Though the other stuff was fine as well, just made me groggy til the BP rose.

I know people can have bad reactions to these drugs, but I never did.

Always, the worst part of any of these procedures was prep for the colonoscopy. It just got to the point where my body refused the rest of the fluid I was supposed to drink. But by that time, it had done its job.

Some people are less bothered by the prep; I think most people are less bothered by the prep. But that's always been the difficult thing for me.

I very much prefer to 'know' *what they are up to - no lies !

Prep is hell. No probs taking, just does not work 'properly' on me ! First time was OK. Got a good prep, therafter *not. Last two times have been the worst, could not see what they were doing. Third time they gave me over double the 'usual' amount of prep - still did not work. Warned them this last time but the gastro did not listen - she 'knew'better...Ho-Hum.

Anyway, a right cock up of a shambles. Anaesthetist, terrific, one of the best ever. Nurses were terrific, couldn't fault. But...sigh. Will have to be redone as have a problem gut with a knot in the gut/adhesions/cannot get to the ascending colon, impossible impasse. Got to find out 'what' the problem is - told her there was a problem and probably a nice 'knot', she refused to listen. Blasted nuisance. No, cannot do a capsule virtual colonoscopy as capsule 'could' get caught in the knot, which would mean surgery. Not a happy bunny.

I prefer to be well awake.

PS We both had exactly the same sedation -

Demerol, pethidine (meperidine) dosing, indications, ...
reference.medscape.com/drug/demerol-meperidine-343315 - Similar to Demerol, pethidine (meperidine) dosing, indications, ...
Medscape - Indication-specific dosing for Demerol, pethidine (meperidine), frequency-based adverse effects, ... Class: Synthetic, Opioids;; Opioid Analgesics .

benzodiazepine(sedative/hypnotic)-Versed(midazolam)

Did nothing for me - nothing at all, neither sedated nor pilled the pain - as the gastro tried to get round the knot in the gut, which 'he' succeeded in doing, but not without causing me much distress, but at least I 'knew' what he was doing as opposed to theis last time when I heard through the grapevine that the gastro was afeared of puncturing my gut...but 'still' kept on trying, and of course, would not have known IF it might have been painful; pain has a role to play, it warns.

I prefer to be awake, fully awake.

Saltire>>>>>>> Sounds like I may be on a similar journey to you. Had your symptoms, especially the mucus stools. Also lots of rumbling stomach and been under some stress for a while. Doc referred me for a colonoscopy and they found mild inflammation in bowel. They took biopsies whilst they were in there (boy is a colonoscopy a weird feeling? - poss my fault for refusing gas or sedation - not painful, just weird) - and found I had Ulcerative Colitis.

Been referred to a Gastro Enterologist to look at starting some treatment. Hope whatever they prescribe stops the weight loss as I'm getting a little too slim.

Anyway, hope this is helpful, although I realise similar symptoms don't necessarily mean the same diagnosis. Hope they get to the bottom of it soon (pun intended!) and things improve for you soon.

In the absence of any meds from the docs, I have been taking some IBS relief supplements which have helped with loose stools and urgency. Things are a bit calmer. The main ingredient is peppermint oil, which is good at relieving GI tract problems. It can be taken as a liquid, but much easier in capsule form.

I have had just sedation in the past but next Spring when I am past the spine surgery, I will have the scopes again. He said this time he will do it at the hospital and not the Gastro Surgery Center under GA because of my intestines being so fragile from the steroids and he wants me ready for emergency surgery. frown I am glad he is thinking ahead though.

Best wishes with the scopes. It is one of those not fun getting ready for but you do what you have to do. smile

hey John,

For 1/2 year I seemed to battle intestinal issues... until I got disciplined with probiotics (at that time Natrens Healthy Trinity) I did not ever get it reversed.

Unsure if you are having similar issues... but I was bouncing around all over... colonoscopy, late night ER visits etc...

not fun battling intestinal problems.

Best to you finding answers.

Tim
