Got this letter from the SAA with a funding request. Found it interesting.

Quote " SAA is funding a pilot program exploring the relationship between the microbiome and HLA-B27. This study is looking at the hypothesis that one's HLA type affects which bacteria are present in the gut and the shaping of the immune system by bacteria in turn affects the likelihood of developing ankylosing Spondylitis. The results will have immediate implications for understanding the cause of AS. This understanding could possible lead to a strategy to prevent the disease in the future."

Very interesting line of study and I am cutting them a check tonight.

Add in pieces like this now coming out.

No families take so little medicine as those of doctors, except those of apothecaries.

Yes, this really makes sense and in no way remotely suggests Ebringer, et al have been right all along. WOW, really? Gut bacteria are determined by our genetics and NOT our diets?!!

I would donate to KickAS.org too, if there were only a way to do so...

wish they were not only looking at HLAB27.

i've had GI issues since I was young (very young....I remember problems from before I was in school, mom says it was since i was born) and then joint issues entered the picture in my mid 30s.

Spondyloarthropathies run in my family.

We may not be HLAB27 positive, but we definitely have some gene causing this and it all starts in the gut for us.

Great grandfather died from stomach cancer, grandmother, mother, etc have all had ulcers, i've had the gastritis and intestinal inflammation and symptoms. Less talk about bowel issues, but I know mom has had the same issues as me, just the constipation, not the diarrhea / not digesting food part, as far as I know, but not something she likes to talk about.

can only assume its the gut microbiome that has caused all these problems from the time I was young....that and genes.....

well, the HLAB27 is a start.

And check this out - ERAP-1

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/286913.php?tw

New study has discovered natural variations in an immune system enzyme that can leave individuals susceptible to the inflammatory rheumatic disease ankylosing spondylitis.

The new study finds that certain pairs of variants in the ERAP1 gene are found only in people with the inflammatory rheumatic disease ankylosing spondylitis.
In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from the University of Southampton in the UK describe how they found the enzyme ERAP1 is highly variable in humans, and specific combinations of variants are found in people with ankylosing spondylitis. (more...)

Wonder if this will start out as the HLA-B27 did, not got AS unless positive for the HLA-B27 - then find: Ohhh. Nooo. Incorrect...!

But great they are looking further into the problem.

Will repost in the AS forum -
