And was sat on hard wooden chair for 3 hours. Woke this morning with lots of lower back pain, can sitting on a chair like this cause a flare.I dont suppose it helps that I am (or was) very tall at 1m 95cm.

(I have had AS for 15 years or so, very stiff in the morning with occasional flare inc pain breathing etc. I have CoCodamol and Dicloflenac prescribed when it flares but taking them makes it difficult to work as a teacher)

WELCOME, Ridley:

Not the chair, but the food!
And it was diclofenac that really hit the acceleration pedal on my AS, so I caution: BE CAREFUL!

We have a forum dedicated to diet; maybe see You there if the AS continues to advance.

HEALTH,
John

Agree with John - food is the likely culprit ! But, a hard chair doesn't help. I always bring a cushion around with me- in fact my 'DogBone' neck pillow. Attached to my pillow by an umbilical cord <g>

Ridley,
I disagree regarding food being the cause of your pain. I would always avoid hard seats to sit on, this also would cause myself back pain. It takes me months to acclimatise to a new car seat. If I ever go out for a meal, I try to find a comfortable seat to sit on. Even sofas can cause me issues.
Dicloflenic (Voltarol), was my choice of NSAID. Which I found to be very effective against my A.S pain. Unfortunately it caused myself a great deal of stomach issues, took 2 years for my stomach to settle down back to normal, after stopping this medication over 15 years ago.
I'm soon to start taking Enbrel, my 4th Anti TNF medication. Like most medication there's side effects to contend with. Although all my previous Anti TNF treatment has helped with the pain control for a certain length of time.
The worst seats for me to sit on are when I go to a footy (Soccer) match, those seats kill me. As the seats are hard plastic chairs. I walk like a crab for a good while after that experience. Worth it if my team wins.

Maybe it's both but for me am improper chair can and gas by itself set off many flares. My chair at work is 20 years old because I dare not change it

I have pillows that I put on chairs and the sofa in my house so I don't set off flare

I suspect it is biomechanical. Sitting incorrectly puts a structural strain on my back thereafter setting off inflammation

Sitting on anything hard will cause serious pain for me. I carry a pillow with me everywhere, if I don't I can't walk properly after. If I forget my pillow or I'm in a business meeting I will take my jacket off, fold it up like a pillow or sit on my hand (which hurts my hand after a while (
