I've wondered the same thing... where did it come from in the very beginning (Did Adam and Eve have it? )? Can it just happen? I've also wondered if my Mom's could have been a false negative. That's certainly a possibility.

Hey,
I do remember reading that many of Ebringer's patients with AS who tested negatively for HLA-B27 often tested positively when retested later. I'm not sure how accurate the test is, but it is possible.

Hey Everybody,
Just saw this post about HLA being passed on. My brother has AS and is HLA positive and when he was dx my mom went and got tested because one of the older myths of AS was that the mother was always the carrier. She was negative. When my AS reared its ugly head my dad decided to go get tested and low and behold HE is positive. No AS but we believe it was carried through my dad's mother, because she had severe psoriasis.
Also about the accident thing. My Dr told me that HLA is concentrated in the spine mostly, also in the eyes (hence Iritis for some of us) and somewhat in joints. When the spine is injured HLA is more concentrated in that area because of the damaged tissue. My brother and I both had back injuries and our AS started in those areas. His was his neck, which he has since broken in a car accident because it was fused, and mine in my mid back. We both later developed the "typical" lower back pain and hip involvement.
This was an interesting thread!

Wow Janet...your right this is interesting!!!...your dad is positive with no AS..!!!and I too had a car accident with a neck injury and I have it!....it really is so darn goofy isn't it??.....I guess if you have the gene..it just takes the right trauma to set the darn thing off.....like a time bomb just sitting there!..so very odd!.....thanks for your input..very interesting!!

I know that the passing of AS from Mother to son has happened at least three times. I got the AS from my Mother who got it from her Father.

My two brothers were also B27 positive and while neither of them did get AS, several of their children did.
