Hi Amanda,

Great! You have a plan! I try to answer the first set and more later.

Suger are ok in Moderation ..The idea is high protien- low carb.

Coke is hell on bones. the body take minerals from bones to buffer the acid. Sweet tea will probably not hurt unless you drink alot(more than a couple glasses a day..sugar in moderation)

Products rarely list starch content. You must know which ingredients are starchy

Almost all vegies are ok (except potatoes and corn of course) some contain some starch but it is usually minimal and if eaten raw-...is hard for the Klebs. to get at

I love ham prepared that way. I usually do it on a grill and use honey instead of brown sugar.. it should be very OK

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!! When i go out i ussally eat as you suggested. when they ask how i would like my potatoe I ask if i can substitute for a veggie or cottage cheese or whatever. If they say no i tell the not to bring a potatoe at all as I do not want any.

Fasting is hard if you are under a lot of stess. Better to try when alone (if ever) if you cannot commit to it totally. The first and second day are harder as your body adjusts. Be sure to ask the Dragon Slayer about the Dr.Garten book and study up on this before you try it.

Good Luck and Perserverance,
ike

Dear Amanda,

Meats listed are ok except bologna and hot dogs as well. Be very carteful with these items as well as sausage. May times fillers and the nasty modified food starch are added.

I remember one spice in particular that affected someone but it was long ago and I can't remember what it was. Ooops.

Be careful with the ketchup and bbq sauces or any commercial preparations. ... Hidden starches and high carb

The syrrup shoud be ok All pancake mixes are very starchy by their nature. As well as Paste. Avoid at ALL cost.

Dark green leafy vegatables are a "good for you" food. They have no starch and are packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber.. I use them to replace starches at breakfast.

Sincerly,
ike

Dear Amanda,

What a thorough person you are! I am impressed! You sure know how to do your homework!

I know what you are feeling when you think of meat with no sauces... we human beings like sauces, don't we?! I still use Worcestershire sauce some and A-1 sauce some. I have tried to cut most barbeque sauces just to be safe.

I have a recipe for a very yummy rub (mixture of spices that you rub on raw meat and let sit in frig, then cook after it marinades) that doesn't contain any starch. I've got steak sitting in my frig right now that we are going to enjoy for dinner tonight that I used this rub on. Just let me know if you'd like the recipe. It is good on either chicken or beef.

I would encourage you to look for Elaine Gottschall's book, "Breaking the Vicious Cycle." It's written for people suffering from irritable bowel/colitis, but it is all about eating starch free foods. It really helped me to understand a little better just what it is that I'm trying to do and why. I was able to check it out at the public library, but I am hoping to purchase a copy for myself soon.

It is very overwhelming for the first few weeks to go grocery shopping. Suddenly you are struck with the realization that almost EVERYTHING on the shelves is starch-laden! It was a blow for me to realize that I could only shop from about 1/8 of the store. But, I am getting very accustomed to the idea now. It is never a good idea to shop when you are hungry, but I have found that it's even more dangerous now! If I'm hungry AND feeling deprived, my chances of intentionally buying something starchy are MUCH TOO high!

Anyway, good job on your mental preparation... I think you're going to do really well! Just be prepared to be at a loss for what to eat on ocassion. Don't get discouraged if and when you feel it is just too hard... hang in there! It WILL GET EASIER!

Take care,

Sharon

P.S. Stay away from all flours except almond. If you'd like some internet links for purchasing it, just let me know... I've got a few sites in my favorites I could send your way.

Hi Amanda,

All of these lists and vague restrictions may seem theoretical at the moment, but they will not be after you respond to the diet. When you respond, the pain goes away (more or less) and you will find you can regulate your level of pain with your food.

Then is also will not be difficult anymore to cut things out as you will re-value food according to
1. does it give me pain?
2 does it taste good?

starting the diet usually has several phases:

1. trying to get a response
---------------------------------
Cut out, step by step, as much as you can until you respond
make sure you stay healthy
cutout targets are all complex carbs:
-starch
-FOS
-lactose

->this is the most difficult phase, where you need determination and you do not know if all this effort will make a difference. The length of this phase varies from several days to several months.

2. optimise your diet
--------------------------------------
See how good you can get it, cut out some more, optimise digestion, introduce some supplements.
->your are in contact with the disease now

3. add things back to your diet and observe what is does to you
--------------------------------------------------
take it slowly and methodically one food at the time
now you are the expert. The diet is only clumsy now, not hard to keep up.
At least when you value having your body back...

Goodluck, and i hope you respond soon

Arjan

I'll post it in the recipe thread, okay?

Take care!

Sharon

P.S. It's not really "mine." I got it off the internet!

Hi Amanda,

You have taken a lot of steps to prepare for this and that is half the battle. I do have one piece of advice about the juice. If you don't care for the grape juice try drinking it mixed with apple juice... maybe 1/4 grape to 3/4 apple... then you can increase the percentage of grape as your body, and taste buds, adjust. I didn't care for it so much at first either but now I am fine at 2/3 grape to 1/3 apple. As you stay with this diet you will find some things you loved before will not taste as good later. But it takes a while.

Best of luck, I can hardly wait to hear how it goes for you.

Be well, Winona

I prefer my grape juice diluted with soda water (hmmm, hope it's not distilled!). I do about 1/2 juice to 1/2 soda water. It lessens the bite of the grape juice and adds a nice fizz.

Hi Sharon,

That's a really good idea too... especially for those AS'ers who are missing their sodas on the NSD/LSD. Sort of like a grape soda.

I have to have something to dilute the juice that's for sure. I really LOVE the taste of grape juice but it just seems like I am drinking syrup when it isn't diluted with something. Soda water is a good idea. Perhaps those who have tried grape and couldn't hack it should try that... it might not be the taste as much as the "texture".
Other things to try...
1/2 grape and 1/2 Apple cider
1/2 grape, 1/2 water (or soda water) and a tad of lemon juice
And for those who long for a tropical drink try a mix of 1/2 grape 1/4 water (or soda water) and 1/4 pineapple juice.. very yummy

I believe the trick is to at least make 1/2 of the drink the concord grape juice so you get the max benefit of the grape.

Be well, Winona
