Haven't been on here in a very long time. My husband is doing good on the remicade treatments. Sad to read about Old George.

My 12 year old son was diagnosed with Sever's disease and immediately I start thinking the worst. How many As'ers had this as a child? Am I worrying over nothing?

Putting my hand up.... my now 16 yo DS had it too. It is typical in the 10-13 yo age group.

It is essentially a disorder of the the growth plates in weightbearing bones - same as Osgood-Schlatter's (knee)and Perthe's (hip) Disease.

As far as I am aware, there is no *known* link, so it's probably coincidental that AS frequently involves the Achilles tendon and plantar fasciitis, both of which connect to the calcaneum, the bone where the Sever's disease occurs. AS is a disorder affecting the enthesis, and this is an area where there are 2 entheses close together and they're dynamically / biomechanically linked.

Having said that, it doesn't stop a mother worrying.... it is my DS more than my DD who gets up off the couch and complains he is all stiff when I question why he's walking strangely! hugss

This is true for me. I have a 19yo boy who will be diagnosed sooner or later, Has the lower back issues, just not bad enough for him to address. I have a 13yo(nexr week) has been diagnosed with Sjogren', and my 11yo girl has Sever's. It comes and goes and is affected by the footwear she chooses.

I did not have sever's but I did have osgood schlatters as a child.
My 12 yr old son has Sever's and siding larsons, back pain and has already had cortisone shots in his knees. I am just waiting for the AS diagnosis.

Severs can be quite common in kids but I too am concerned with the link to AS given I had similar issues at the same age and now have AS.

Talking about severs, my son had to wear a restrictive plastic boot thingy on his foot for most of last year. Aternating between the feet every 6weeks. All other treatments had failed to help and he was unable to walk when it was realy bad.

I wish your son all the best.

Well, Howdy! It has been 10 years or more? Or was your son a baby when you came on? About the same time as DeanPaul?
I hope you get some good news...

How are you feeling?

Yes, it has been a very long time. My oldest son is 17 and my other one is 12. The 12 year old is the one with Severs.

I'm was so sad when I read about Old George. He was so sweet.

Osgood schlatters affects the patela tendon at the point where it attaches to the tibia. I posted an x-ray on here (prob on page 2) showing the damage it has caused. I will be having an op to fix it soon.

Siding larsons affects the same tendon but the other end where it attaches to the patella.
