Hey WW-Good to see you! While I was there, I was thinking "Is this the place Wishing Well was talking about?" How funny! Yep, as you can see from my long post, I did the whole 3 weeks-big needles, big nurses and a bunch of old East Germans still there. It was 3 long weeks and I wasn't the happiest person there, but I am happy I did it now!
How are you doing? Pat and I also send our best to you and Alex!

Hi Luigi,
I didn't know if I told you the story then but apparently I did. I do very well on the remicade - zero inflammation - and could stop dieting alltogether if I wished but I'm so used to it that I really grow fat when I start eating starch now. So now I'm doing an bit more relaxed low starch diet. Nevertheless I gained so much kilo's that I couldn't do my yearly half marathon as I got a bit of a knee injury. Other side effect of the remicade is that my skin is a lot dryer and easy irritated and even scaly at some point. But with some ointments I got this now under control to the point that I don't need them anymore. Furthermore I am treated now in a different part of the hospital were they are knowledgable about using the needles. Since that time they put the needles in in one go without pain or blue spots. So I'm no longer known as "Gerard the living pin cushion".

I was thinking that maybe other people would like to try the spa's at Jachymov too. You could let us know when you go to the Czech's and maybe some others could try it too at the same time so there would be some more communication possible.
Take care and let us know how it goes,
Gerard

Hey Guys,

Here it is September, about 7 months since my radon therapy treatment at Jachymov, Czech Republic and, well, I'm still feeling terrific! I had one big flare back at the beginning of June (end of the semester stress)which lasted only 3 days. But then it went away and I immediately went back to feeling like a normal, pain-free human being again. I just got back from a 3 month trip in Southeast Asia (a budget 3 month trip--backpack and all). My wife and I were completely amazed that I was able to travel as hard as I did (like I did back when I was in my 20's). No fatigue, no inflammation, no 4 hour naps every afternoon--I forgot what it was like!

I am now taking about one or two arcoxia a week (an anti-inflammatory in the Vioxx family--not approved in the States, but sold over the counter here in the UAE-God bless 'em). For years it was high doses of that med daily + predisone when needed (which was a lot before Jachymov).

So, 7 months of being virtually pain-free/inflammation-free and as mobile as a 20 year-old...My verdict: It Works! Highly recommend it! Radium Palace Spa: Jachymov, Czech Republic--Book it! Enjoy the experience (unless you speak fluent Czech or German, bring lots and lots of books--lots of books!)

PS. I'm still keeping up with my processed food free diet and daily swimming (have added light weight training to the mix)--but I'm eating starch...and LOVING IT! Life is good.
If you like YouTube, do a search for Jachymov-I think there's a video or two on that town.

Hello to Luigi & all the other folks out there

I want to thank you for providing an update on your condition & circumstances, on this form as well as the personal note you dropped me on your return from what sounds an amazing trip. Congratulations on your continued feeling of well being & ability to reduce meds to minimum levels. Only wish I could contemplate something so exiting as a backpacking tour of SE Asia.
After reading your initial forum about the experiences you had in Jachymov, I became very interested in obtaining more info, so went to the web site for Radon palace, which isn't a great web site, but does have the basic info on cost, etc.
It also led me to do more research & discover other European spa's that also specialize in treating AS, amongst other conditions. The consensus seems to be that Jachymov is by far the best of them. Further research led me to the Free Enterprise mines outside of Boulder, Montana (which I see you also noted).
Now, because of my extreme condition(bad, won't bore you with details), desperation would be one adjective to describe my stae of mind, having said that I also possess the invaluable commodity known as optimism. This optimism has led me to try some unusual treatments which have helped alleviate symtoms at times, but not enough! As for the NSD, that one almost killed me(no exageration)about6 years ago.
With this in mind, the decision was made to take the trip over to Jachymov, except hold on a moment, with family considerations etc. this is going to be tricky to fit into the schedule for some time. Which brings me to the point, Boulder, Montana is about 8 hours drive from where I live(near Calgary, Alberta) & as such is much easier to get to, more economical, etc. So its off to Montana to visit the radon mines for a 10 days treatment soon & looking forward very much to some positive results. Will update you & everybody else out there in KICKAS land as to how things turn out. Even if it goes well at the mines, I am still very interested in the Radon palace & that treatment.
PS, also agreed to take part in a pilot reasearch project while at the mine.

Cheers,

Aragorn

Aragorn,

Desparation--I know that word all too well. Optimism--luckily I know that one too. Best of luck to you in the radon mines of Montana! Please do let us know about your experience there (you're going to be amazed at the results). I'm sending out nothing but positive thoughts to you-this will work-you will feel normal again.

Interestingly enough, I had blood work done this week (nearly 8 mos after Jachymov)...my doctor called me and was in a state of disbelief. Having tracked my disease activity for the past 3 years (active being the main word here)he was in shock to see that my CRP rate was below 10 (used to average anywhere between 48-75 never below)and my white blood count had gone from an "above normal" 12000 to only 5000. As he put it,"There is basically no disease activity. Whatever you're doing, keep doing it." So, it's off to Jachymov again in January!

BTW, I just have to say again that this is one of the few treatments for AS that across the board the research says is effective for long term relief--LONG TERM. For me, the cost of going to the Czech Republic for 21 days was much lower than the US $20,000 that I would have had to shell out for TNF meds. The NSD diet nearly did me in as well...I look at the pictures of myself during that period and it is obvious that I was putting my health at risk.

Well, my cane (yes, I had to use one)has been put away in the storage closet--I'm walking barefoot around the house for the first time in nearly 6 years--even spent 3 weeks in Aug. walking barefoot on a long beach every day...heaven. Got a cold a couple of weeks ago and laughed at all the "God Bless You's" I got (haven't been able to sneeze for years--so I haven't heard that for a long time). Yes, Radon Therapy--HOLY CRAP--IT WORKS!

All the best to you!
Luigi

I Live in Montana and I am about 200 miles from the Boulder mine. I keep thinking about going there but my AS is moderate and I am not in a lot of pain most of the time so I worry about the radon exposure. Maybe come summertime I will give it a shot just to see if it works.

Keeps us posted

Here's the link to a short video we made of our trip to the Radium Palace... nothing special-just gives a general overview of the place. When I go back later this year, I'll be sure to get footage of the Radon treatment itself.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. It looks so Cool. Apart from the historical buildings, the terrain looks so much like Montana. Hmmmm...
