I was diagnosed with AS a year ago, have been taking ibuprofen 600mg twice a day for about 14 months now. Over the last few months I have been having pains and cramping in my stomach after eating certain foods, very very painful bloating and gas. This has never happened before, I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted. Sometimes I have nausea after eating certain things, but mostly very painful bloating and gas after eating, but only with certain foods, usually the junk I shouldn't be eating anyway.
Does anyone have experience with ulcers resulting from ibuprofen use? I was afraid this would happen and I really don't see any other explanation for my sudden sensitivity to food.
Please help and give some advice on past experiences!
Thanks guys!

Hey. My aunt got ulcers after using ibuprofen for various ailments over the years [20+ years]. She was so upset that none of her docs warned her about the adverse affects of using ibuprofen.

Have you checked out the NSD forum? When I started NSD [last september], it helped me out immensely with my stomach. Firstly, it taught me that foods actually affected how my stomach felt. I guess I had been eating badly for so many years that I didn't even know what foods upset my stomach! It didn't take long for me to learn what I can and can not eat. Different foods caused me different pains in different areas. Starch mainly caused me arthritis pain knees, shoulders, back, hips. Too much eggs, ice cream and hot chocolate caused me stomach upset.

I learned much from the NSD forum. If you haven't checked it out, you should

Cheers,
Rita

Quit the Ibuprofen and start taking extra-strength Pepcid AC every day . . . avoid NSAIDs and alcohol . . . (yes I have one too!) The Pepcid has helped me hugely (the doc told me to take it, I didn't self-dx on this) and I only take it occasionally now. Also, try not to let your stomach sit empty for too long, and the acid will start working on the ulcer when it has nothing else to pay attention to.

Are you in the news media? I'm in newspaper . . .

I would suggest that you see a Dr. and not just assume that you have an ulcer unless you know that you do for sure.

It might very well be one but it could also be anything from an ulcer to IBS or Crohns to Diviticulitus.

Good luck,

Lisa

Hi there - well, I never did get an ulcer, yet. But, when I had my very first flare, could not move my neck, was in agony etc etc. The GP put me on the Ibuprofen. Shoot, man. Was I in a mess. Literally. Went straight to my gut. He then changed the meds, different NSAIDs and changed them again, more different NSAIDs and so forth. 'Eventually' (message sank in?) scripted a gut protector. Had an appalling several months (which even involved missing a flight connection as I was bathroom ensconced - like forever!) Problems continued, he refused to take cognisance. So, I changed GPs. Thank goodness I did. Turned out I had a pre-cancer gut condition. Secreting adenomatous polyps. They were successfully removed, but, I do have to go for periodic check-ups. Next one due in three years time.

Meanwhile? Unable to take NSAIDs. Many foods upset my gut, including wheat products (C'mas cake wail) onions and most veggies, some fruits and a whole myriad of goodies (foods). No, do not eat processed or pre-prepared dishes/foods (no thanks) steer well clear of 'snacks' (yuck to crisps - too vile) and all fast foods and all fried foods.

Try to keep the problem under control, but, unless v. careful, do experience painful bloating, nausea, abdominal cramps - double over with pain. Know what can kick-start it, and know to steer clear: wheat; vegetables are almost a no-no now, onions, brassicas and root, but OK with carrots; spinnach is OK. Many fruits fall into the same category which includes strawberries - dunno 'why' the straws! Dried fruits are a no-no, especially dried apricots - possibly the whatever they use to preserve em?

Yep. Used to be able to eat whatever I chose - hows about chilli stuffed red chillies for breakfast on bread and butter? (Delicious). Oh, and great goat curry prepared by a road-side wallah? Could go on, but, never had any problem on foods. Now? Gas and bloating. Anything wheat being the biggie trouble maker and yes, rice. Have to be careful with rice, and of course, all those veggies. Sigh. Flaming nuisance.

Can relate to yr problems. Horrible. Case of trial and error and cutting out the offenders - which includes those blasted NSAIDs (Celebrex works good for me, Remedeine and Co-Dydramol ditto - but hardly touch em, still have unused meds from over a year ago...!) otherwise I take the LDN and the AAKG/j - see previous posts for additional info on the LDN and AAKG/j.

Any questions don't hesitate. But, please do get yourself checked out PDQ.

Thank you for all of your responses! After a week out of work due to pain and weakness, and some miserable tests it has been confirmed that it is Crohns. I'm trying not to have a pity party for myself, but at least now I know what it is and can get myself on the road to recovery.
I will probably be taking a low dose of prednisone until the condition is under control.
If anyone has any experience with Crohns or its treatments please let me know. Thanks again guys!

Great you now have the DX. That is a real positive step forward, though a miserable condition to have to put up with. Check out the use of LDN, low dose Naltrexone for Crohn's:

Yes, you will mainly see LDN and MS mentioned but it is also used for treatment in crohn's. Several of us here are using the LDN as an anti-inflammatory - works. See Drugs and Alternatives.
