No. Brothers. English. Alan Ebringer now retired, is an immunologist and rheumatologist, headed up Middlesex Hospital Rheumy dept. He invented the NSD diet. His bro lives in Oz. Forget the brother's christian name. To my own knowledge, they are both Brits, but one went to Australia - though, possibly, the other way round...! Someone else will jump in soon.

Alan Ebhringer was Tinkedrbell's doctor when she lived in the UK. Sure do wish that I had been referred to him all those yeaes ago when I lived in London. (Could have had my DX AND been through this blasted mess by now.) ohwell

You could always google him/them up though yes.

Wouldn't it be terrif IF we could clone em both yes

Hey, Darryn:

He is Australian, but working in England.

AND HE did not develop NSD (it was too radical); THAT was Carol Sinclair--a Kiwi funnily enough also living in England.

Thanks for the reference; I have asked that site to change the information.

ESPECIALLY since we just received a generous donation (our ONLY donation since site upgrades) form a noted Aussie and we don't want to obscure the impact of this country's contributions.

But then there's YOU! ;-))

John

PS: (for my fellow Americans and others) POM=Prisoner Of Mother England; a slight jibe (not very derogatory) that is ironic because Australia began as a prison colony, but they eventually viewed those left in dreary old England as prisoners of the crown. At least that's what I've been told (I think there is a reference to "pomy ba****d" in the Python's movie "Life of Brian."

Ah-Ha John. Thanks for that. So the Ebringers are Aussies, and Alan Ebringer relocated to POM land...sure was luck for his patients. Do you know, I thought he invented the diet and that Carol Sinclair perfected her NSD by speakaing 'with' Alan Ebringer.

I sure had it back-to-front <LOL>

Thanks for the clarification (but then I said that someone would jump in soon. I Should have waited!! 'Smile'.)

For those interested in the origins of the word, POM, it seems there are several theories, of which John's is one. Here's a link to the Wikipedia entry if you're interested:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_names_for_the_British

The Oxford English Dictionary seems to prefer the version that the origin came from pomegranite which was Australian rhyming slang for immigrant. Who knows?

Hey John (and Molly)

I hate to go head to head with you on this one, John, but I always thought that Carol Sinclair and Alan Ebringer independently discovered the connection between no starch and relieving IBS/AS symptoms.

I found this excert from a blog by Carol Sinclair that I think proves this to be the case. It's under the heading "How can diet reduce the pain and symptoms of arthritis."

I know it doesn't really matter who it was but I just wanted to continue the discussion to see what you thought for interests sake! Whatever, it's all interesting stuff isn't it?!

I didn’t make the scientific discovery behind this breakthrough method of treatment – I just independently discovered the diet. The science was done by a Professor of Immunology, Professor Alan Ebringer. Professor Ebringer is a Consultant on Autoimmune Diseases to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Washington. He’s also an Hon. Consultant in Rheumatology.

When a group of his patients contacted me via the internet to tell me that mine was the only book they could find about the problems of eating starch, how to cook low-starch meals (over 200 recipes) and live a low-starch life, they told me about the professor and their disease, AS. I was stunned. To think that someone in the medical world was actually validating my diet, was amazing. But I still didn’t know that I had the same disease – not until Professor Ebringer told me the about the arthritic symptoms, and I realised that I had had them – but they’d disappeared after I went on the Low-Starch Diet.

I have had the blood test which confirms that I am HLA-B27 positive, and Professor Ebringer has investigated my family history, which I discovered is littered with AS suffers. My father and grandmother both had the symptoms, and other living members of my family have been diagnosed with AS. All this confirms that although I’ve been on the diet for over 25 years and have no bone degeneration visible on X-rays – which are still the final diagnostic proof – I have the pre-AS condition. If I went off the diet I would develop full-blown AS.

It is such a pity that rheumatologists will not even get their AS patients to try a completely safe, drug-free method of treatment. Unfortunately they have no incentive to do so in the UK, because the NHS is so drug orientated, and medication for serious conditions is subsidised or free for patients. But in Australia and New Zealand, where patients have to pay for their medication, doctors are now beginning to recommend the Low Starch Diet.

The second of the Amazing Ebringer Brothers is called "Roland" and he is a rheumatologist right here in Melbourne, where I live! clap clap clap laugh It's a bl@@dy long trek to the other side of 'town' to see the man, but well worth the trip! He is either a home-grown Aussie, or a Brit who has worked long and hard to perfect his colonial accent! grin2

(Trivia: His son Tim is a lecturer at Melbourne Uni in IT security, and works with the profoundly gifted son of one of my best friends - onto his second degree at just age 18!)

Tink - That is what I understood. That Ebringer was 'there' and then, Carol Sinclair found/discovered LSD/NSD for herself and perfected the diet following counsultation with Alan Ebringer.

Not that it matters a hill o'beans, so long as someone got there! yes

Would be so wonderful if every rheumy *started* with the LSD/NSD and IF that didn't work, then and only then, to go to the biggie drugs. But of course, there would be no pennies in the various back pockets if that were the case...

Just attended the French/English class 'spring' dinner (terrific evening). Interestingly, my French neighbours at the table said of their own volition how much kick-back happened along here in France! Yes. Knew that it happened (where doesn't it happen?) especially in recommending to the pvt clinics, but had not realised just how extensive it was. Hence, of course, the Prof's stance with the 'pushing' of the anti-TNF drugs and the two pharma 'plants' in the audience feeding him his 'lines'. Hmmmmmm. Gotta larf, all too evident.

Hey, Tink:

Perhaps I was not clear:

Ebringer=LSD (London AS Diet; Low Starch Diet)
Sinclair=NSD (No Starch Diet)

Ebringer probably found his LSD before Carol, but Carol discovered her NSD independently and not knowing of Ebringer's work.

Actually, she did not then know she had AS, but thought her IBS was a primary illness. It was our member here George (also an Ebringer patient) who contacted her to tell her to see Ebringer--perhaps eight or nine years ago. Then she found she has the B27 antigen but still cannot get an AS diagnosis because she is not (and will probably never become) fused. Yes, her father had severe AS.

But it was not Ebringer who first found the connection between starch and AS and although I would give first mention to Edgar Cayce (Thomas Sugrue, his biographer, had AS or ReA and was told to avoid starch and eat more vegetables that grow above ground than below), but although Dr. Giraud Campbell did not call his regimen "no starch," he successfully treated AS patients using diet before 1978.

I'm not that certain about the origins of POM--but from rhyming slang, it does sound better as pomegranate/immigrant like trouble and strife booted me down those apples and pears.

But an Englishman displaced to Australia then that would be a Brit in Australia, so I don't understand the reference that way.
