I agree with everything you've said.
OK, many people 'seem' to tolerate starch well but the point I would make is that the 'modern' Western diet is too heavily dominated by grain based carbohydrates (mainly refined starches) and people as a result (whether they realize it or not) suffer higher incidences of avoidable diseases - such as obesity related dibetes, heart disease, and even many cancers.

NSD helps not only AS suffers but potentially the entire population. Of course 'normal' people can tolerate low levels of starches - but grains are addictive - and the mind is weak!


Dx Oct 2006 B27+ undifferentiated spondlyarthropathy (uSpA) with mild sebhorrhoeic dermatitis and mild Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) controlled by NSD since 2007.

It's amazing to see the debate raging among the "nutrition/medical" community, if you can call it that. I never even knew this was such a heated debate until I started searching for a cure for this AS monster. The science really seems to support a high-fat/low-carb diet. Virtually all of the experts agree that the standard-american-diet is garbage. The rest of the experts, that support high-carb/low-fat diets, don't have much science to support their position-just a lot of dogma.

What is so fascinating to me, and convincing, is the convergence of different sciences, all coming to the same conclusion. Peter at Hyperlipid is a veterinary anaesthetist. Dr. Ayers is an expert in microbiology. Dr. Harris has his degree in zoology, and is an MD radiologist. He also seems to be quite the expert on metabolism since he started his blog. It's probably just a hobby. What a bunch of nerds...and God bless them.

Thanks for drifting back in Chris.

I figure there is something to the higher fat diet as well. Still I would prefer to have some more carbs (whole grains), but this diet is easily better to my prior diet SAD diet...(Standard Amercian Diet).

Update, a little over a year after discovering KickAS. Although, KickAS was just the start of my journey. Check the links in my original post.

My AS is officially in remission, with no more drugs. My muscle mass is steadily increasing. My weight is slowly-but-surely increasing, after an initial loss of 60 lbs., while my waist size only gets smaller. I can finally do 2 or 3 pullups, which is something I've never been able to do in my life.

Not only are the AS symptoms gone, but the long list of other symptoms are still gone. Bowel movements are good, and regular. No more heartburn. No more skin problems(eczema, psoriasis). No more diabetic symptoms(adhesive capsulitis, waking up to urinate).

...and last, but certainly not least, I CAN SLEEP! WOOHOOO! 6, 8, 10 hours, solid. I really believe the key is eating right, so you can sleep right. You can't get good sleep with AS and diabetes symptoms, and you can't heal if you can't sleep.

If you look into a paleo diet the theory is that we were nomads and moved to where our food was looong time ago. Then we became farmers to be able to stay in one place, and that's when we became overloaded with starch. I don't believe we need cornflakes and pasta and in fact this north american way of eating could be responsible for not just AS but a whole host of other deceases. I just watched a program about a 850 lb mom who had her stomach stapled and ended up dying, leaving her two daughters behind. They were cutting people out of their houses because they couldn't fit through the front door, to get them help. That would never happen on a NS/LS diet. We have to start using our brains and stop following the marketing machine and the common food guide because it's not about your health - it's all about profit. Pheww, ok I am done now

This is the most awesome news Chris. I am so happy for you. This is why I stick around KA even tho my hubby also has his AS under control with the NSD.....to hear stories like yours.

Did you have to go very extreme with the diet ie exclude dairy and/or all sugar or fruit or other foods etc? Or were you able to achieve your results simply by following the No Starch Diet alone?

I was very strict NSD at first, but the more I studied, the more I moved to a paleo-type diet(check the links in my original post). When I really kept my carbs low, I started being able to sleep, and that's when it all really started turning around.

I stay away from all fried foods, and try to eat red meat over poultry because of the omega 6 to omega 3 imbalance. I wasn't really able to eat grass-fed meat much, but I supplemented with fish oil. I took a bunch of vitamins at first, but now I'm down to mostly just fish oil and vitamin C. I also supplemented with vit D at first, but for the last few months have just made sure to get plenty of sun.

About the dairy...I stayed away from it at first. When I started shifting towards the paleo diet, I reintroduced dairy in the form of hard cheese and half&half, which I drink like milk. Yum...
