This is great news! I hope a cause is found, but in the meantime, good diet and no alcohol will be an excellent start.

Wow, so simple that nobody could figure it out!

Both my sweetie and I are hypoglycemic and in severe cases, it can cause all manner of nastiness. I'm so glad they finally got to the bottom of what's going on with Cody, Bridge. What a relief to have a solid plan going forward.

Warm hugs,

Kat

It is great news Bridge !!!!!

Really really hard to believe the Docs couldn't figure it out....with all the symptoms etc. I would think it would have been one of the first things to check. Then again as you said it fluctuates...does this mean when they checked it before it was always normal??

I know they checked him for Diabetes at least twice before, and the only test he had come back abnormal, very early on, was the A1C Hemoglobin, which is like, an indication of how STABLE your blood sugar has been over the last few weeks. That was the only test to come back weird, that first year, and I can't believe no one thought to give him a glucose monitor at that point . . . ? The other tests that have been "abnormal" are his thyroid, (slightly wonked, enlarged, and high I think) and his two kinds of vascular pneumonia. And his super-high blood pressure. so, for now . . . this is a FANTASTIC breakthrough, even if we haven't figured out his fluctuations yet. At least we're starting to!

We both got our first Hep C tests today . . . we didn't realize until too late that his mom had Hep C and we'd been taking care of her without gloves. And yes, with blood contact, like checking her blood sugar, and we're not sure, but there may have been a lancet mix-up, and Cody may have used her used needle on the glucose monitor. So yay. lol

That's not good. I sure hope everything is OK, you do not need HepC on top of everything else.

hi briget,

wondering if they have ideas yet for why the large fluctuations in blood sugar? or how to treat it? would it just be diet at this point, like eating a number of small meals throughout the day as to not get hungry, balancing carbs, fats, proteins, or much more complex than that? or is it better to find the underlying cause and treat that. could the thyroid cause these kind of issues. i know that's a lot of questions, so if the simple answer is "we just don't know yet", i understand.

as for the hepC, good to be getting tested. but at least now they have treatments. i have a friend who had a blood transfusion as a baby, contracted hepC then, but in his 20s the treatments came and he has been hepC free since then. so hoping neither of you have it, but if so, there are treatments.

Hi Bridget,
This is great news. His doctors now have a lead to follow. Good job on the detective work too. smile
Take care,

If his blood sugar bounces all over, the A1c might not reflect that as well as numerous measurements each day. It's only an average of blood glucoses over the life of the red blood cell (about 120 days). Lots of highs and lows would likely balance out to something on the order of 7.0 to 10.0. This should be treated but might not give dire warning signs like he's been having lately.

Hope your Hep C's are negative. Hugs.

Hi Briget
So glad to hear you have had a breakthrough in finding out what is wrong with Cody.
Hope this leads to finding the root of the problem and you can get him some treatment.
The less things you have to worry about the better - I know you have been through the wringer lately - have not had chance to make the reply I wanted to - a quick hug did not seem enough.
Take care and wishing every bit of good fortune to you and your family, sweetie hugss

Fingers crossed on the Hep C test.... Re the diet, cutting out starch and cutting back on sugar gave me much better control of my blood sugar, once my body adjusted. Prior to that there have been times when my levels got too low and I would turn into a monster. Anyway, I hope that this is the breakthrough that you need to get to the bottom of the Cody-itis.
x
