If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hi everyone, so I have tried going as starch free as possible and I still have a little bit of back pain here and there, I suspect it was the coffee. But anyway, that aside, my main issue is that no matter how much water I drink and vegetables that I eat while going NSD/LSD I still experience severe constipation.
Some days it feels like I'm pushing out a rock, if I'm lucky that is. I eat plenty of brocolli, red cabbage, but I also eat quite a bit of meat and eggs, about equal portions of both.
I've fallen off the bandwagon since a few days ago and ate stuff I shouldn't have eaten (starchy foods), and bought a bunch of metamucil tablets. And yes, I finally broke my constipation streak.
Now my question is: Is this constipation normal when doing the NSD, like a period that the body needs to adjust? Is it possible that I may be eating too much meat?
Thanks

The only two things that have really fixed my chronic constipation are:
1. (methyl)prednisone
and
2. Humira
For me, its the inflammatory bowel problems that are causing the chronic constipation.
Diet does help mine: cabbage seems to be the best thing for it. Prunes and other fruits do too, but too much sugar for my diabetes so cabbage is better for me.
Psyllium is the best thing for the symptom, before I was given methylpred or humira.
I suspect that like for many of us, the reason you are constipated is because you have inflammation in your ileum too.
sue
Spondyloarthropathy, HLAB27 negative Humira (still methylprednisone for flares, just not as often. Aleve if needed, rarely.) LDN/zanaflex/flector patches over SI/ice vits C, D. probiotics. hyaluronic acid. CoQ, Mg, Ca, K. chiro walk, bike no dairy (casein sensitivity), limited eggs, limited yeast (bread)

Well, I went low starch with my daughter when she started, and had a little trouble at first. I'd say from the 2nd month-7th month, but not every single day. Some things that seem to have helped me:
Increased veggie/fruit ratio from 1/2 to 2/3 times my protein. Added flax whenever possible, and if not possible I snack on a couple flax crackers in the evening before my main meal.
I eat a medjool date daily as a sweet. I have to stop at one, because I'm highly addicted to them now, and could happily eat the whole pack in one sitting...which would be about the same amount of sugar as drinking an entire 12 pack of soda.
I also make sure to have a salad with every afternoon and evening, even if I have other fruits and veggies in addition. I like a mix of romaine hearts and baby spinach.
In her book (and I haven't heard others talk about this much for some reason) Carol Sinclair refers to taking a daily dose of Epsom Salt for this problem. I have not had to go there, but I imagine it tastes awful. I wonder if just taking a magnesium supplement wouldn't do the same thing, if you can find one that is starch free?

I also wonder why the salt water flush is not talked about more often here. I use it only when I feel it's really necessary but it does work every single time. Is it super unhealthy for some reason that I don't know of?

I have had problems on and off for years - it's hard to tell if eating low starch has made it worse or was getting worse anyway along with my AS?
For me, my daily kiwifruit has been my "maintenance treatment" for years. I am almost guaranteed to have constipation if I miss it. I can't digest cabbage or large quantities of salad etc. I also eat bio yoghurt every day, which helps my digestive system generally.
When that isn't enough, I mix the contents of a magnesium capsule (I can't swallow capsules and all the magnesium tablets were too big for me too) with some yoghurt in the evening and that does the trick. It also helps with muscle cramps and sleep etc. The one I take says it is natural marine magnesium and is magnesium oxide free and contains no added wheat, gluten, corn, yeast, milk, artificial flavours or preservatives.

I had similar problems. I added chia seeds to my diet and that helped A LOT. Try them!!

That's a good question. Anybody with experience with NSD know the answer to this old post?

I suffered from constipation issues with NSD for some time, once I incorporated probiotics into my routine I resolved those issues.
