It was very similar to the horntail! I wonder if it was a species of horntail.

I'm a bug fanatic extraordinaire. In high school I did two categories in Science Olympiad competition and even made it to nationals. The two categories: genetics and INSECTS.

I think you saw a female Giant Ichneumon wasp. There are a few subspecies in the U.S., and they are all big. Including the ovipositor they can reach over 4 inches in length. Ichneumons are parasitic, they use their ovipositors to bore into wood (usually trees) and deposit eggs on the larvae of other wood-boring insects, especially Horntails. They look downright freaky, but they rarely sting. The adults are most active in the late summer months, so this would be about the right time to come across them (or for them to come across you!). I'll see if I can find you a picture.

I don't think I've seen anything with a tail as long as that!! If that indeed is what it is!

BUG KILLING HINTS: (I freak when I see a spider, and can't even get close enough to squish them).

1) Start with hairspray. This 'sticks' them to themselves and they won't be able to fly at you and "GET you".

2) Find something more poisionous than Raid. Like you said, it takes alot of it for the really SCAREY bugs. Use something like a household cleaner w/bleach, amonia, anything that you deem stronger than bug spray.

3) Once you're properly armed, dowse that crispy critter til it rolls over and cries 'uncle'.
Leave it soaking in a small pool of poison until you know for sure it's dead, then remove it from the house.

4) Do like I do and scream 911 at the top of my lungs until your husband comes in to save you from the dreaded beastie that's about to eat you. (screaming 911 is our 'code' talk for "there's a HUGE spider in here and you'd better come in and kill it fast!!).

Mrs Phillips You had me cracking up with that. It reminded me of one day when we had a praying mantis in the kitchen and my wife was, erm, screaming to say the least. She said "it's looking at me" I had to put a towel over her head to get her out of the kitchen. I went to grab it to put it outside and it crawled up inside one of the recess high-hat lights. I was already running late for work, so I told her that I would take care of it when I got home. "You're not leaving here until that thing is gone" my wife said in a very calm loving way . Needless to say 30 minutes later and some disassembly and reassembly of the light fixture, the praying mantis was outside.
