hi Ted,
You made a good point re the starch affecting our nutrient absorption which is of course an important issue in pregnancy. thanks for your ideas,
Peggy

Hi Peggy,

A long, long time ago in a place far, far away...

(last year feels like EONS ago believe me!)

Well anyway, getting back to the point, I knew I would need and want to be med-free before considering pregnancy and initially was thinking it wasn't going to happen because of being on Sulpha and Naproxen and having a pain level of 5-6 on average.

First found KA, then NSD and gave it a whirl - expectation=zero, results=100%!!

At the time there was a lot of info on the board about not being able to be NSD actually DURING a pregancy and to be honest was expecting to read more of the same on this thread so I'm glad that things have been updated! With the info I had though, I thought I would have to be at least LSD for the pregnancy so after a few months I started to experiment with reintroducing starches and they had verrry little effect at all!

Even maxxed out the starches just to see how much I could push it, and besides learning that most heavy-duty starches had all taste and pleasure of a piece of cardboard, I learned that I had a very high tolerance of them - (overwhelming feeling to say *whoopee do!!!*) - they did eventually cause heartburn, ankle swelling, low abdo pain and maybe some joint stiffness, but rarely pain.

I do strongly think that my level of gut healing has been a strong influence on this, and I also know that most NSD'ers would agree that their level of POST-diet pain is very different to what they had before the diet.

I wish that the current thinking had been around when I was looking it up and reading into it - errr, actually, NO!!! I'm glad it wasn't!!! Whew! What a lucky escape from a very dodgy gene pool He probably would have bet half the house on what sex the baby was!

Take care,

Jan

Hello all,

It's been a very long time since I've posted, but just logged on last week and trying to get caught up on all of the posts. I have some personal experience with pregnancy and NSD/LSD so I wanted to quickly share. Before becoming pregnant, I became a strict NSDer and was able to quit all NSAIDs. I became pregnant in August last year and really agonized over my diet and whether or not the baby would be healthy if I continued on the NSD. Because there was not enough research to risk this I modified my diet to LSD, but still cut out all of the main starches--pasta, bread, rice, etc. By my third month, it became apparent that I was in remission which I think is very common during pregnancy. I felt wonderful, but was too scared to increase my intake of starches. So I diligently made sure that I ate plenty of fruits and vegetables and took all of the necessary prenatal supplements. Later in the pregnancy, I will admit that I indulged on things like pizza and a little rice at meals since I was feeling so good. I am happy to report that I gave birth to a VERY healthy baby boy in April. The only problem I had was during delivery. He would not drop down into the pelvic cavity and was taken by emergency c-section. (He was a big boy and I'm a very small-framed person) I'm afraid I may be coming out of remission as my pain has started to increase over the past several months. Breastfeeding has made it difficult to stay low starch as I am voraciously hungry all of the time and only weigh about 102 lbs. I have one more month of breastfeeding and plan to return to NSD once I finish.

So, I do believe that I successfully stayed LSD almost until the end with a few indulgences. I believe that as long as you are getting enough of the "good carbs" (low starch/low glycemic index) that maintaining the LSD during pregnancy is viable and can be healthy way of life.

Congratulations on your new baby Meredith!
What a wonderful and encouraging post to all who are on the LSD/NSD diets and are considering pregnancy. I wish you continued success with it all and many happy healthy years to come!

Enjoy your baby!
Kathy

Thanks for telling us your story Meredith & congratulations.
One suggestion for feeding you & your little un's voracious appetites is to take Arjan's tip and up the fat intake. He quaffs 2 kG of butter a week, but there are also fatty yogurts, cream, milk etc. Replacing the rice with these could bring down the returning pain.
