I just saw a quick blurb on CNN in one of those moving subtitles that Merck was coming out with a successor to VIOXX. I didn't quite catch the name. Arvi-something-or-other. Does anyone here know anything about the drug?

TIA

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J., Dec. 30, 2003 - Merck & Co., Inc. today announced it has submitted a New Drug Application for ARCOXIA™ (etoricoxib) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The application was submitted today. Merck’s NDA seeks indications for ARCOXIA for the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic low back pain, acute pain, dysmenorrhea, acute gouty arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Ive lived with VIOXX for a year now, works excellent for me...

I recently tried ARCOXIA for a month and didnt like it, it doesnt work as strong like VIOXX, didnt work like vioxx, gave me nausea side effects for the first weeks...

Looks like my body reacts way much better with vioxx..

The price for arcoxia is not that bad.

A 25mg x 28 of Vioxx is about $65 here in Mexico
A 90mg x 28 of Arcoxia is about $70 here in Mexico

PS. Arcoxia has been in Mexico for a while but rearely used and prescribed, I really dont know why but in my experience its two thumbs up for vioxx...

Here's an article from Forbes on this new drug.

Bad News: Merck Withdraws Arcoxia Application
Matthew Herper, 03.15.02, 2:00 PM ET

NEW YORK - Merck today withdrew its application with the Food and Drug Administration for Arcoxia, its next-generation painkiller. Many analysts had been expecting the drug to help Merck win a long-standing duel for the arthritis market with rival Pharmacia, which makes similar drugs.

http://www.forbes.com/2002/03/15/0315mrk.html

One major issue, Butler says, is whether the drug would be approved to treat any form of chronic pain. Such an approval is essential for Arcoxia to beat Pharmacia's drugs. Merck's stated reason for withdrawing the application is that it wants a chronic-pain indication. The company says new data could result in Arcoxia being approved for a form of chronic back pain called ankylosing spondylitis.

BEWARE, IT'S ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY!

Hello Kmu,

I'm experiencing the opposit, Vioxx has little effect and Arcoxia is the most effective,

Still trying to find the best compromise between effectiveness and long term side effects,

Best, S.

I Participated in a clinical trial in 2001 for Merck. I beleive this is the drug I was on. It was great. I hadn't felt that good in over 20 years. All through the trial I kept asking my doc what was going to happen at the end of the year long study. He said that I was on the second trial because Merck wanted a "little more data" for their submission. They would probably continue to supply me with free medicine until is became available to buy.

At the end of the year, I was told that Merck would not continue the medicine. I was taken off cold turkey. My doc was upset because he had never seen this happen in previous trials and Merck would not tell him why.

They did agree to give me Vioxx for free which I questioned because at that time, Vioxx was not "approved" for AS.

6 months later, September 10,2001 I suffered a heart attack. No previous history. Cardiology could not say why it happened. All he did say was that I should never take a cox-2 again. My Rhrumy agreed and I've been on it since.

I'm not trying to scare or taint any help, but there are always two sides to a story.
