THis is jimdt's wife(Mary).Today Jim suffered a stroke. This morning started off normal. We met our breakfast group at Hardee's.He joked with the guys and was giving the girls behind the counter a hard time.About 1:00PM his speech started slurring.I thought he was clowning around at first.(we were at home). Then he fell but he was able to get up on his own.Our niece came over and took him to the ER.They did a CT scan and it showed that he had had some mini strokes. His blood pressure was 193 over 110.There was weakness in his right arm and leg.He had been having some problems with his arm lately but not the leg.He went to my doctor who knows about his AS problems. He usually goes to the VAHe has a good Rheummy in Little Rock.Any way my doc thought his problems then were AS related because his blood pressure was in the normal range. He suggested he get an MRI from the VA to make sure .We had the MRI last friday and were supposed to get the results today. Then all of this happened. He is in ICU tonight , but his blood pressure is coming down rapidly. He still is having trouble getting the words out and has weakness on his right side.I called his nurse awhile ago and she said he is improving rapidlyand that he is using his left hand to move around and is doing better all of the time.
Have any of you had this problem and could this still be AS related? The doctors here are good but my doc who knows about his AS and listens to us is out of the office this week.Because we have been around in circles wit doctors before,I'm not sure they know what is going on.His rheummy is 225 miles away.I'm sure that he will be here in the hospital a few days.I 'm going to try to call his rheummy tomorrow and i'm sure that the VA will want him treated there since he get all of his treatments there.I know that I'm rambling now , but I would appreciate any thoughts or of any experiences any have had. Thanks,Mary

mary... please give jim a very gentle hug from Teddi ... and you need to find someone who will hug you too!

from your post (thank you for feeling free enough to post!) well there's no doubt this situation sucks... BUT mini strokes are a whole lot better than the big ones and the prognosis is usually good.

don't be shy about asking the ICU doc to do a phone consultation with his rheumy! they do it all the time and if nothing else, you and jim will feel better knowing the ICU doc has the advantage of your rheumy's opinion.

just some thoughts.

very warm thoughts are pumping your direction... please keep us updated.

mega hugs,
teddi

keep smiling... it matters! FYI-Because of its literal definition ("fear of the marketplace"), agoraphobia is often misunderstood as a fear of crowds or a fear of open spaces. The clinical definition of agoraphobia is a fear of situations or places "from which escape might be difficult (or embarrassing) or in which help may not be available in the event" of a panic attack.

Hi Mary

I am so sorry to hear about Jim. Please let him know that we are praying for him, and thinking about him.

Keep coming back here to update us please, and when Jim is well and back home, maybe you can join our extended family with your own user name.

The best to both of you.

Hugs
Lori

Dear Mary:

I'm glad you recognised the symptoms so early and got him the help he needed, the rapid recovery that he's making is likely in part due to your quick action.

I will keep you and Jim in my thoughts. Please keep us posted.

Many hugs,
Jeanna

Mary,
Sorry to hear about Jim. I have had a similar experience, up to the hospitalization. My bp will go well over 200/110 without meds and I get the arm and chest pain with the sever head ache. I have spent hours in the clinic but not in the hospital. His Rheumy should know, but it sounds like he is getting good care. We often have to be very specific about our care and tell them what we would like to have done.
You are both in my prayers.
Lon
