It can be all to easy to get carried away with drugs such as Oxycontin and before you know it you could end up like me chewing 400mg/day to get the rush off it. Let me tell you it can ruin your life and if you think you're headed that way you need to talk to someone. It took me months to break the addiction and it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. If you'd rather talk private then pm me and I'll help in any way I can.

Man, I'm so sorry to hear anyone has to go through this. I was just hearing the number of people addicted to pain meds is quite high.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the warning. I know quite a few people who have suffered with the addiction. It is difficult. Sorry you had to go through it.

Are you off them completely now Stever? Wow, that amount of Oxy would kill anyone without a built immunity to it. If someone swallowed that much they would die never mind chewing them. Glad to hear your doing well giving up those Oxy's. I was taking only 60mgs a day plus 6 or more percocet per day and I had some mild withdrawal when I weaned myself off them. I couldn't imagine the withdrawal you had.

Thanks for posting this... this is exactly why I wouldn't let my pain doc prescribe Oxycontin to me... I'm trying even now to get him to give me something less addictive than Lortab! I am scared to death of addiction. My parents were both drug and alcohol addicted all of their lives, and several of my siblings stuggle with it too... but I haven't had that issue... and I don't want to start now. Thank you for posting this sobering warning! Good on you to have broken the cycle!

Blessings,

Mike

I defintely regret taking it. I don't have a lot of memory of the time I was taking them. Thankfully the rheumy I have now doesn't prescribe them and I am ok with that.

Yes, it is good to be reminded of what can happen. Thankfully I have not had an addictive personality (except to chocolate) but my hubby "knows" he does because of his addiction to nicotine and he won't touch alcohol and a pain med only if he is just totally wiped out with it. He says that he knows that he could become addicted and won't take a chance because of the addictions in his family.

I have weaned myself down on the MSContin to 15 mg. twice daily heading off it because I can't tell that it helps and I am NOT going to increase it to try to get it to a helpful level. At one time a dr. had me at 60 mg. 2 x daily and I don't want to be there again. I do take the Lortabs about 4 a day. The Darvocet worked for years but just reached a point where it didn't help any more. I DO aim to get back to it slowly. My dr. thinks I shouldn't worry about the addiction because he keeps tabs on me and the meds so close. BUT I do.

How are you Mike? Hope all is well with you.

Thanks Steve for bringing this up. We all need reminders.

Merry Christmas.

So just out of curiosity...what does a chronic pain sufferer do when they have gotten to the point of abuse/addiction? How does one manage AS pain without some sort of pain pills? Or do they?

Just my ignorance wanting to learn.....

It's interesting to note from a chronic pain workshop I attended that there is a distinct difference between
dependence and addiction

an addict is looking for the "high"
while the dependent is looking for "pain relief"
