Winter has finally found MD, unfortunately and I'm paying for it! I'm hoping for some help and advice from anyone who can! When the cold weather is affecting your AS, does heating pads or ice packs help you out better? Any help is definitely appreciated. Thanks everyone! Sarah

Ice packs were always killers for me, it would really stiffen me up. However, heating pads always seemed to help me out short term. I also loved hot showers when a bit stiff.

For me, heating pad for sure. Hot tubs are quite nice too!  The cold makes me stiff and sore. We've got below zero temps here in Michigan too! I feel your pain!

I agree with Tim..
If I am cold or hurting I will just jump under the covers and try and get warm, also wil add the heating pad to my back and as close as I can get to my SI joints.
If I am high on steroids..lol then you can find me with my head in the freezer. I guess that is about the only good thing about steroids they are a heat maker.

Looooong hot showers, hot tubs, anything that will get some heat into my bones in this weather. Honestly, the cold feels like a knife in my bones.
If you can find one, a moist heat heating pad is better than a dry heat one, as it gets the heat into your muscles more efficiently. I found one that is long enough to cover my entire spine!! It was about $100 (Cdn.) but well worth the investment.

Thanks everyone! Nothing seemed to want to work last night or today, so I thought maybe I was losing it!
I think we were spoiled out here with "warm" weather and when this cold front came through, it's kicked my butt. We've gone from having high's in the 50's and 60's to have high's in the single digits and teens. I don't think my body was quite ready for it yet.

What kind of moist heating pad do you have? I haven't seen one around here (but I also haven't specifically looked for one). I'm definitely interested in getting one, regardless of the price if it helps. Anything is better than this pain!

I've rigged up a makeshift one with a damp hand towel put inside the cover of my heating pad...

I got mine at an alternative health/massage shop. My massage therapist had one and she bought it at the same shop. The pad itself has a thicker plastic exterior than dry heat ones, and it comes with a piece of foam that you wet with hot water and put inside the fabric cover. It really does make a difference. They come in different sizes as well, so I got the one that would cover my whole back. Seniors Shops They have a regular large one and one specifically for arthritis. The arthritis one is $2 more for some reason, probably because it's for a targetted group. And these ones don't need water. They create their own moisture. Hugs,
