The pad itself has a thicker plastic exterior than dry heat ones, and it comes with a piece of foam that you wet with hot water and put inside the fabric cover. It really does make a difference. They come in different sizes as well, so I got the one that would cover my whole back.

They have a regular large one and one specifically for arthritis. The arthritis one is $2 more for some reason, probably because it's for a targetted group. And these ones don't need water. They create their own moisture.

Hi Sarah,
I hear you, I'm in Virginia and I'm feeling the cold too. My crazy Akita wants to sit out there in it, but I've managed to get him in for now. He has his own joint problems, so I hate for him to be outside in this.
I use heat on most everything except my heel, (I use ice on that and usually the ice is a bag of whole kernel corn), my knee and my hands. I don't use heat or ice on my hands, but I will put on gloves or wrap them.
I found a heating pad at Walmart that is moist or dry, 12 inches by 24 inches, 4 heat settings and has automatic turn off after 1 hour. It helps me get to sleep and I don't have to worry about burning myself. Of course I wake up and turn it back on quite often. It's been pretty good, I've used it every day for the last year. It was under $30.

Hi Wanda,
What part of VA are you in? I have to drive down to the Herndon area and Ft Belvoir area on occassion! I also have an Akita who loves this weather. She actually looks a lot like yours! How funny is that?!
Anyways. I will have to go check Wal-mart out. I never thought about going to a place like that. I'm up for anything. I'm so afraid to use ice because of the pain cold weather causes, so I'm using my heating pad and it's just not working. I'm hoping the moist pad does the trick!

Hi Sarah, I'm in Yorktown on the peninsula near Hampton. I think it's probably about 2 hours from Ft. Belvoir, maybe a little more. I'd love to see pictures of your Akita, how old is she?   Wanda

Here in the UK its very cold too! I dont do cold lol
Seriously i think heat pad is great, dont know where i would b without my little miss naughty hot water bottle. If i get cold it makes its worse, so ice is deffo out for me.
Good luck trying to ease ur pain. Its an answer i am still forever searching for.

HI,
for me cold water, or cold swimming pool is a suicide, after swimming in cold water I feel so stiff, horrible.
Even for the summer and the sea I have swimming suit for diving, that warms my joints.
I never put ice pack, only warm things, it works for me just fine

Hi Sarah My heat pad is my best friend  I live in northern PA and it's 10 below here the last few nights and 5 during the day. I definately have gotten my money's worth from my heating pad and my electric blanket I have on top of my mattress. Cindy
