Hi all,
Last year I had to have a tooth extracted because of the pain from the tooth being fused to the gum. That was done by a regular dentist. Mistake. Last week I had to have another one done. This time by an Oral surgeon. Much better, I was put to sleep and am healing well after just one week. When the dentist cut the other tooth out she took some bone and it took 5 months to heal.
Anyone with tooth problems from AS?
I know JamesB lost all of his.
I would love to hear from you.

Doreen, I also have teeth fused to the gum. My last dentist broke two teeth extracting them. It was no fun. She had to use a grinder and didn't get all the two teeth out completely.

So I know what you went through. I am glad it went better this time.

WOW!!!

It's funny you have posted this....I have been feeling like something has been really wrong.

Last October I had 2 teeth removed, 1 was a baby tooth so he had that one out in like 30 seconds no problem.

The other one which was one in the back, I had chipped months earlier and it was really hurting, after like 5 shots he started pulling on it and it broke into several pieces, at one point my face was smashed into his stomach as he had pliers in my mouth, when he was finally done he said he had to go all the way to the jawbone and that he might have gotten some of that. He also said that in the next few months I might have some bone trying to work its way out....I should have known BONE, he didnt say tooth...since then I have had several VERY PAINFUL points pop up in my gums which I have cut open myself (I know my family thinks Im crazy..swear I should have been a Dr.) and between well lets just say certain instruments have extracted myself several pieces of bone....something about that is just not right.

I have another tooth I have chipped and I refuse to go back. This last year has been a year of hell (sorry) I thought childbirth was tough. My thoughts are we will see what comes first enough pain or me pulling the tooth myself....if it is attached to the jaw again you can see where this is leading.

I never ever thought it could be from my tooth fusing to the gum but that is exactly what happened the last time, you posting this just kind of put it all together for me.

Oh guys be careful, they took X-rays but he never mentioned this, I should have asked to look at them...I dont think he was a bad dentist, just not sure if he knew what he was getting into...and he was told that I have AS but not sure how much difference that made.

If you have AS, and have to go to the dentist, they HAVE to do x-rays if they are going to extract a tooth, when they do YOU ask to see it, it is your right...let them know that you have AS and that you have had friends or have heard about people that they have had to go to the jawbone and then it has been well you know weeks and months later when the bone has decided to rear it's ugly head trying to get out, that has been almost as painful as the procedure itself...this last one popped up way back in the left, made me think I had strep it hurt so bad and I decided to leave it alone. I just truly wonder how many pieces are still in there...

Please guys make sure, I have had AS for 17 years now and am just now realizing what this was...if anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

I like the idea of the Oral Surgeon but honestly my pain experience was nothing while they were pulling it out it was kind of daunting when my head was going back and forth like the girl from the Excorcist...lol but things like that dont really bother me.

Doreen, I hear you girl! afterwards I had a hole the size of a dime which took about 2 months to clear up. Im here if you have any more questions...I hope you are feeling better with this.

Hugs,

Lisa

Wtih that dentist last year, she pulled and rocked and finally she did an x-ray and said the tooth was fused, based on what I could feel she actually used some tool to cut the tooth out. The pain before and after all of that I put next to having a baby.
This time I went to another dentist that I was told did extractions. But after looking at the x-ray he referred me to the Oral surgeon. And I am glad he did. I don't like the expense but it is well worth the quick healing and very little pain. Kind of under his breath he said I can't imagine what you went through.
When I had my post-op exam yesterday, he said my gum looked extreemly good and asked if I am a quick healer.

I am praying that this is it for the rest of this year.

Thanks for your response

Lisa,
First of all, You sound like if you have gone through a year of hell as I did. I was so upset to see that I had tooth problems again this year I just couldn't believe it.
Anyway, If I were you I would go or get a referral to an Oral surgeon. I am 74 years old and live alone, and can't really afford the expense. A friend told me about a dental service where I pay to join and then would get discounts on dental work. It costs $35.00 for one year and $7.00 a month for one person. I decided to join. My visit to the dentist was $28.00 for his consultation and one tooth x-ray, and his office made the arrangements for the Oral surgeon.
The Oral surgeon was $56.00 for office visit and consultation, then $401.00 for extraction and anesthesia. All of the above at a 25% discount.
Based on how I feel today, it is well worth it. We all know dentist are very expensive. and if you are talking specialist then, it is going to costs you. That is why you see so many people with bad teeth.

At my age as much as I love to shop and can't seem to have to enough purses and shoes. I know I have to cut back, and find ways to take care of my dental bills.
My son is willing to help but I told him, he will have plenty of time to help me in the future. Plus he and his wife just paid for my cataract surgerys last year.

You said your hole from your tooth was like a dime, I wish. Mine was like a pea pod. you scoop out the three or four peas and you have that long shape. Mine stayed like that until flesh strated to grow in there. And what made it worse and I am sure longer to heal is the fact that everything I ate ended up in there, and the constant rinsing and flushing I think made it take so much longer to heal.

Like you said, I feel the same way about the dentist that did my first tooth. I also had a little tooth she whipped out of there, it didn't have any root. But she didn't know the other one was going to be that hard to deal with.

Anyway, Thanks so much for your reply.

Wishing you a better year that last.

I have lost about eight molars due to them becoming brittle and breaking if half or off at the gum line. On at least two of those I have come up off the chair from the force the dentist had yo use to get the teeth out. When this all started happening I first had two root canals with crowns to try to save the teeth. The points on one tooth they put in before adding the crown went through the roots and into the bone when I would chew causing an abcess several times until I had it pulled and the other crown came off twice until I have that tooth removed.

I am presently looking for a dentist to do some more dental work after most of my filling have been lost, plus another tooth has broken.

Hi Doreen,
I'm glad this time around was much easier for you. I would have wrote you sooner but I've been stuck in bed. I'm glad all went well. By the way, my tooth problems were caused by Osteoporosis too. No fusing that I was aware of, but I had plenty of breaking and splitting etc. Some of molars looked as if they had small bony formations at the root's edges though.
Take Care,
James.

If your teeth are not fused I guess a regular dentist would be able to handle your situation.
Hope you find one that you can work with. For me if I ever hear the word fused again it will be off to an oral surgeon.

Take care

Hi James,
So sorry you have been stuck in the bed. I do have Osteoporosis, and also diabetes all of these things seem to have an affect on the teeth. I have never had any breaking or splitting. I had one lost filling for years and I finally had to have that tooth taken out last year. I am just praying I will be able to get through the rest of this year without any more tooth problems.
Write me and let me know how you have been doing. What is happening, What is your doctor saying.
Looking for ward to hearing from you.

Doreen,

Well the thing about mine is it was all FREE.

I go to the indian clinic, me and the kids get to go because my Grandmother was full blooded, my Mom was half and I am 1/4th so me and the kids can go there for life.

The one I went to is a brand new state of the art place they spent millions on it. I remember when I went in I had NEVER seen equipment like this, it was like out of a sci-fi movie.

He gave me more than enough deadner, I think maybe he just didnt realize how tough it was going to be until after he got in there.

I am sure if I go back it will be the same thing just deaden, get the pliers and shake her head like a dog shakes a piece of meat until it either breaks off or comes out...lol

Im sure I will do like last time wait until I have to decide what is worse the pain or whats gonna happen once I get there...lol

Mine was long also, I remember the first night when I got home pulled out the gauze to repack, it was still numb so I stuck my finger in there and I was like OMG I still feel tooth.....it was my jawbone!

We will have to keep up with each other and see who has to go back first...lol

Hugs,

Lisa
