Magnesium is really helpful.

Also, I was having really bad issues with my muscles. They tested my iron levels and they were really low (blood transfusion low). Once I started iron supplements, my muscles got better almost instantly.

Very specific case and very specific solution, but thought I'd throw it out there just as an FYI.

i tried flexeril and hated it. it made me feel doped up for a day or two after taking just one pill. i just couldn't function that way.

I'm exactly the same way. Never heard of anyone else getting that reaction, so I'm glad to hear it's not just me. Although it's unfortunate that it doesn't work for you either!

I've used Robaxacet (not sure as to its availability outside of Canada), which is mainly methocarbamol (and you can get it in combination with either acetaminophen, ASA, or ibuprofen). It's OTC here, and pretty mild. It worked very well at night for me, and didn't keep me groggy for longer than about 6 hours (during sleep, so it was fine). Unfortunately, I seem to have developed a tolerance to it, so am on the hunt for a new muscle relaxant (other than flexeril). I may have to try out some zanaflex.

Spoke too soon. Apparently zanaflex isn't available in Canada. lol

Be careful before starting any kind of iron suppliments. I actually have Polycythemia (too many red blood cells). It too can cause many of the same problems as to little iron, but has the added risks of strokes and heart attacks. I guess it can be true with any vitamins.

Thanks for all your suggestions; I have tried valerian root, but seems to have no effect at all! I have found taking 1 tramadol before bed helps, but is that because I am now addicted to it? Only problem with that is I sleep for 12 hours, and I need to get back to work, so that's not an option!

Will check with my Dr about some of your other suggestions:-)

Thanks again; I love this site, so good to know there is support and help out there!

Hi
Whewn I am in a flare, nothing knocks me flat. The only thing that gives any benefit is to get really hot, by exercise. Yes, it takes me 1 1/2 to geta 20 minute work out, but all the drugs just started stealing my life.
diet and exercise are the lasing helpers for me.
Keep on asking questions...

hi megan,

search under its generic name, Tizanidine.
i don't know if that's available in canada, but that's what i take now.
i just can't ever remember the generic name so i just call it zanaflex.
hopefully you can get the generic and try it.

oh yes lon,

exercise definitely is an important component of my day to day as well.

and i know what you mean about the drugs, i do take a few things, but i've tried and decided i didn't like the side effects against more. so i know where you are coming from.

Have you heard of Formula 303? It is a homeopathic medicine and has no side effects. It definitely helps me loosen up when I am stiff. Another thing I take is Zyflamend which helps with the inflammation. I take two in the morning and two at night. I also take two tablespoons of omega-3 oil a day. These things all help. I will list links of these products below and you can take a look at them. I hope that it helps.

If the links do not work you can copy and paste them into the search bar above.

Let me know if this helps you.
