Hi ..
Only have been on the LSD for a week.. wondered when you do the "apple fast"? Is this for a flare? I am on a medrol pack to try and control some inflammatory symptoms, and wonder if I should try that. I have IBS so I know I havent dont too well with the skins on the apples. Are they starch free or ok when doing the fast. I dont know about 3 days, I could probably do 2 if needed. I am presently on narcotics, until I get an official diagnosis , so I have some pain control but the diet has been good so far.
Tell me about the apple fast.. delicious apples, any certain ones? skin, no skin?

thanks.. jess

I think many on here have done it and I'm sure you will get many positive affirmations. As I remember, the redder the apple the better and it depends on if they are "in season" then there is less starch. I have only done it once, my experience was not very positive because I completely crashed the morning of day 3, not sure what was going on but my body was definitely in distress and it took me all day to recover eating small amounts of regular food. My advice would be to consult a dietician or MD before undertaking what is really a significant dietary change to your system.

Jess,
I am unable to stay on the NSD for more than a week. I have never gotten complete relief. But when I fast for 1-3 days. Then just eat apples, and then soft boiled eggs- I feel so much better. So in about 5 days I am in less pain, my stomach is shrunk down and IBS is better.
The harder the apple the better. I eat nearly all but the seed and stem. I do not test for starch, cause I am doing this for my stomach.
Good luck. Nice to meet you.

Thank you . I appreciate the replies. I am trying the diet and not having a difficult time too much, as I didn't eat potatoes or pasta before the diet, but liked my bagels, bread though.
I do like fruit so that is a plus. I may consider the apple fast this week, but my stomach has been acting up lately. I am on painkillers until the rheumy gets this figured out, and I think between that supplemental iron, etc.. constipation can be an issue.. So, today I feel a bit sick, so I am considering it for later. Nice to meet you too!

Hello JESS and welcome to KA!
I too fallow the NSD for about 4 months, and feeling better....but with the 3 day apple fast you must be careful.I do the fast last week for 3 days, the first 2 days were ok....no problem with energy just a big appetite. But the 3th day was quite bad.....my back pain was at a peak of 9 from 2-3,I was feeling dizzy and tired, but my inflammation was dropping.I'm wondering if the 3 days apple fast could have trigger this bad reaction(back pain).I presume that the apple's skin could cause the pain as I heard that the skin is starchy if is not ripped. If you are at the start of the diet I advise you to accommodate first with the diet and then to try a monodiet fast so the impact on your body will not be severe. The fast is for reducing a bad flare but also for healing the intestinal tract and overcome the AS monster complications.I will try other fast in the near future to see how my body reacts.I'm waiting John's(Dragonslayer) answer on this tread.
Take care!

Hello,

I think fall may be better time in States as apples are more in season. I did it first in October of 2002 and did it in Oct and then Nov and Dec. For me really turned things around... energy wise and constipation wise as well. I do not know all the science behind it... but I believe apples cleaned me up and made me more efficient digester and just improved things in my GI.

It has been a long time since I did 3 days since... used to do it every 3-4 months like clock work.

Best to you,

Tim

Hi Jess and welcome.

I have never been able to find apples that aren't starchy so I have been afraid to try the apple fast. But you can use something else to fast on. The idea is to use just one food to give your gut a break so something like green grapes are good to fast on if that would be easier on your GI tract. I have also done a cherry fast when they were in season, and even cucumbers.

Good luck with the diet.

Annette
