Hi all,

I continue to remain on a high fat/moderate protein/low carb diet and from a pain/inflammation standpoint, I'm doing swimmingly. Because of my concerns of this high fat diet, I am monitoring my cholesterol. Here are my latest #s (apologies for the poor formatting, couldn't get numbers to line-up).

_______5/2010--1/2010--1/2009
LDL-----124-----148-----104
HDL-----97------94------51

What's interesting is that beginning in January, I went from two eggs fried in butter, to three eggs fried in butter for breakfast. I cook with copious amounts of butter. I also continue to eat lots of fish (fresh sardines, salmon, trout). I'm puzzled as to why my LDL would drop (not that I'm complaining!), and don't know what constitutes a 'significant' change. I have slowly resumed activity, but thought exercise would raise the good cholesterol, and not necessarily lower the bad cholesterol? Based on these results, I feel that staying on this path is an acceptable risk for me. I believe the benefits of this dietary path continue to outweigh the risks for me (let's hope I'm right!). BTW, for those of you keeping score, I'm on No Starch/No Sugar diet. I've found the fat to be helpful, especially as I've started exercising again.

Feel free to make your own conclusions above. Now that I've been able to manage my spondy in a way where I'm completely asymptomatic, I find the whole journey very fascinating and basically changing my entire view of what we're taught about health.

I don't post as much, and I see a bunch of new faces, so best of luck to whatever you try!

Freddie

i think your numbers look really good, the LDL isn't really that high, and the HDLs are phenomenal! i was thinking the same thing about exercise only affecting the HDLs, not the LDLs, but maybe?

so when you say no sugar, none? you don't even consume any fruit?

anyway, i'm thrilled you are feeling so good! thanks for sharing with everyone!

Hi Sue!

Good to hear from you! smile

To answer your question, I don't consume any fruit anymore. This was very difficult for me to do and one of the last 'levers' that I pulled with the dietary approach. Ultimately, after lots of repeated experiments, I determined there was a direct link to fruit (sugar) consumption and my brain fog/sinus issues. I finally relented, and decided to adopt a candida diet and am glad that I did.

Fruit is definitely one of the things that I miss the most. One day.... I'll eat perfectly ripe blackberries again... I can only hope. tongue4

let me start by saying: 1- i have not researched to confirm this 2- i am NO expert on this subject. with that said, i read somewhere that 2 eggs and 1 stick of butter [not margrine or like products] per day would balance your cholesterol to its 'normal' level. if its high, it comes down. if its low, it comes up. your post interests me enough that i think i want to read up on this. intriguing! [spelling?] thanks for updating on old post keeping it all together :] makes it easy to follow progress.

Hi Alinus!

In a nutshell, I am on a NSD + No Sugar diet. My general approach is outlined in the following site. You'll see occasional references to it in the NSD forum. I will be posting more detailed thoughts about it later. The primary focus of this protocol is adopting a life style that will 'allegdly' strengthen one's immune system. That being said, I think in our case, an NSD approach is the bedrock to any dietary approach.
http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/

From a supplement perspective, I keep it very simple:
Magnesium, Calcium, Vit C, Vit B Complex, Cod Liver Oil, Probiotics

From a daily diet perspective, in addition to the restrictions I listed above, I pretty much stay away from anything processed. I only eat homemade meals now, and that is very inconvenient (but less inconvenient than being in pain). With the exception of butter (for purported gut healing properties), I also don't take any dairy. The only thing I drink is water (absolutely no coffee, tea, juice, alchohol, etc.).

A typical breakfast is 3 eggs fried in butter and then a bowl of greens sauteed in butter.

A typical lunch is a salad with some chicken, olives, and a naturally pickled cucumbers. The only salad dressing I use is olive oil and sea salt.

A typical dinner is some greens sauteed in coconut oil and fish (typically salmon, trout, or fresh sardines) or chicken.

As for snacks, I rely on walnuts and macadamia nuts. I also make my own chicken broth using lots of chicken feet and necks or backs. I'll use the broth to cook greens (e.g. napa cabbage), or to poach eggs (e.g. quail eggs).

For the first 8-9 months, I gave up red meat. I mainly did that because I experienced slower 'transit' time when eating red meat. I now eat it occasionally, and consider it a treat. I haven't eaten pork in over a year (which was very hard for me because it used to be my favorite meat (I miss bacon!!!)).

It took me months until I settled into the diet, and during the initial periods, scoured the NSD forums learning as much as I could from the experience of others. It's now secondhand to me, and 99% of the time, don't miss what I'm not eating. I do, however, get annoyed about how much of my free time I spend taking care of myself.

While I cannot prove it, I do believe the lifestyle changes I've made have helped me address other chronic health issues. I no longer have skin problems such as eczema; this was the first winter where I didn't have a need to apply lotion to keep my skin from drying out. I no longer have sinus problems. I also didn't get sick this year, which is pretty impressive given the severity of the cold season this winter (most of my colleagues were sick at one point during the cold season). My digestion dramatically improved too.

I tried other things too (e.g. acupuncture, IR saunas, epsom salt baths, qi gong, ultrasound, chiropractic adjustments (activator only), etc.), but with the exception of acupuncture, I didn't feel the other modalities were as pivotal as the dietary changes.

I hope the above helps. Feel free to PM me if you have additional questions. I hope you find some relief, no matter what path you take.

Best of luck!

Freddie

Thanks for the well wishes Stacey!

It's nice to poke my head into the mix again. I'm taking advantage of my vacation by spending some time on the KickAS forums! laugh3
