I have never really liked taking NSAIDS. Most have pretty rough side effects on me like feeling all hot and very tired or irritable.
Ive been taking Mobic for a long time as needed. WHich previously was maybe once or twice a month until my AS got worse in the last few years following gastro and now i pretty much have constant pain that varies from 3 or 4 out of 10 to much worse and incapacitating.
Ive taken an anti inflammatory because ive basically had to every day for the last two months and it worries me.
I like to drink wine occasionally but have had to cut that out completely.
But how long have people here successfully taken NSAIDS?

Ive had very little success with dietary changes thus far.

i personally haven't tried one that both works and does not give side effects (typically gastritis and/or edema or tired and/or brain fog) but trying a new one, daypro soon. but i've read here that others have had success. and yet others almost end up with either ulcers and/or intestinal upset. seems highly variable to me.

good luck on your journey! smile

Can't touch em, me. Been on several over the years. Mobic - caused dread intestinal probs; Ibuprofen ditto; and so on for about 5 different NSAIDs. Then on Vioxx, but that was removed from the market place (anyways do have a minor heart condition); Celebrex Cox-2 - was OK with that for a goodish time until xacerbated Reflux/GERD. So that was out. Then was on Nexen - pretty good for me, but...has a bad reputation for many side effects especially liver probs. I do have slightly elevated liver enzymes. So, that one is out. Recently, was Arcoxia, but that could xacerbate the probs I already have, so NOT taking it. Dr can have it back! (Only have had such for any breakthrough pain, am now doing without).

Basically, can't touch em. Almost soley rely on the LDN - low dose Naltrexone. Basically no side effects and seems to work. That plus going easy on the starches.

Gastro and AS are consistant bedfellows... NSAIDs will upseet the gut, which is a given, a known. IF you take NSAIDs, then *must take a gut protector and a probiotic and prebiotic. Got to protect the stomach and the gut. Otheriwse in a right predicament! (Which 'most' doctors neglect to tell their patients!)

I do drink wine, and also bourbon. On very hot hot summer days the very occasional beer. But a glass of wine most evenings. Or, a bourbon. One way and another I do pretty good. (Very rarely eat cake or pastries - prefer savoury items. Take very little salt - hate salt and hate sweet stuff. So my general 'dislikes' help I suppose 'smile').

First and foremsot protect the gut. Imoperative. Lots of information here on KA about that. Search button top right of website.

Go well -

Banned in many countries owing to its side effects, including FDA banned in the USA.

Availability
•According to medic8.com, "It [Nimesulide] did not achieve Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in the USA, and is banned in many countries due to cases of jaundice and hepatitis induced by its use. Italy was the first country to allow the drug in 1985. The European Medicine Evaluation Agency has prohibited the use of Nimesulide for children under the age of 12. Currently, Nimesulide is still available in many countries."

One takes oe's choice! Some react badly, some react not too badly, others don't react at all. Each individual is just that, individual. So v. diff to classify. I would prob eact v. badly as even have side effects to many toothpastes - can't touch Euthymol!

Anyways, hope this helps, but, FDA banned in the USA - so doubt that many KAers will be on this med.

Thank you very much Mollyc 1i for the information on Nimesulide. I was told the NEW Nimesulide has very less side effect.

However it is very dangerous, after reading all those facts, so I am shifting to another NSAID with consultation of Rhumatologist.

Hiya Molly,.. Gastro and AS are not always bedfellows and gastro upset with nsaids is not a 'given'.

I've had AS for 30 yrs and have never had gastro issues of any kind (except at initial onset for 1 day), so while GI issues are not uncommon with AS, to make such a blanket statement is making up facts.

"Subclinical gut inflammation has been described in up to two-thirds of patients with spondyloarthropathies (SpA)." Not three-thirds. smile

I've been taking NSAIDS for 28 years, every single day, non-stop as one treatment for my AS and have never taken a stomach protector medication. I never needed one. Why? Because there is nothing wrong with my stomach or intestinal tract. Maybe as I age ( eek ) this will change but I'm grateful for the 28 yrs of relief I've had and hate to imagine how I would have managed without.

"..about two-thirds of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug users demonstrate intestinal inflammation." Again, not three-thirds.

Quotes source, PubMed abstract: Gastrointestinal lesions associated with spondyloarthropathies.

My rheumatologist did not prescribe stomach protector meds in my case because they are simply unnecessary. This is not neglect but quite the opposite - a recognition of the fact that not all patients are the same and not all patients respond to medications in the same way that you do. We are all different. Vive la différence!

Ack, Firefox is about to crash on me, again tongue4 so I'd better end here!

Mig - You are one of the very few KAers here who can take those NSAIDs without side effects...darn lucky. It is a known that AS and gastro probs are indeed bedfellows, but, that does not mean that ALL ASers will have gut probs, just that many do. No, I did not give statistics, none, at all - let alone two-thirds or three-thirds! I just mentioned that they were a 'given' - in the loosest sense obviously as I then said quote: "One takes one's choice! Some react badly, some react not too badly, others don't react at all. Each individual is just that, individual. So v. diff to classify. I would prob react v. badly as even have side effects to many toothpastes - can't touch Euthymol!

Anyways, hope this helps, but, FDA banned in the USA - so doubt that many KAers will be on this med."

This was in 'particfular' reference to Nimesulide for Sagar who posed the question.

And it is imperative that anyone taking any kind of med, whether for AS, RA, cancer, or even for just a cold/sore throat, needs to know of any possible side effects, but even more so when they have a conditon/disease like AS, RA etc - and might indeed be on heavy doses of NSAIDs - or any other drug. Side effects of any medication should never be hidden under rugs!

Great when one has 'no' side effects to drugs, but never to assume that one either won't have nor yet again that one will have...'Smile'. One has to be careful, to be 'aware' and to check it out. Don't rely on one's doctor to advise one, as they don't always do so - and certainly not for NSAIDs (just as they didn't for me and I was in a hell state with them until I figured it all out for *myself. And, such has happened to others here, I am not alone.)

But there ya go, some do react and others don't. C'est la vie - but not such a nice 'vie' at all...not with AS it aint - nor is it for many other diseases.

Oh yes, and Ramakentesh, the original poster, has gut problems following NSAID use. His post was in concern over his gut problems following his taking, being scripted for, NSAIDs. (Another ASer with gut problems).

Four-thirds of me applauds such an intelligent and balanced discussion on this important topic! clap

Hey Mig, which NSAID works for you, may I ask?

I worry about it too, Naproxen helps me a bit, but try to avoid when I can. I haven't had any upset stomach problems so far

Have seen others here say that they took Naproxen, Celebrex for years and then suddenly developed stomach pain, needed to stop, so that has been a warning that put me on high alert! yes
