This is all great information, it's a little confusing...what I take away from this discussion is that probiotics is a good idea, but may not help you or take a long time before it does. What is FOS?

others may have already said this but for ME lots of probiotics make me flare. i have found a few that i can take but not daily cuz, again, flare. there is sucj thing as 'die off' symptoms which r basically a worsening of ones current symptoms. thing is i tried to stick with it and just kept feeling worse so IF it were 'die off' then i didnt push thru it to see if id ever feel better.

Thanks Sunnypower, how long were you on probiotics before you gave up? I was told you get a lot of gas the first few days, but I guess that's worse for your loved ones ha ha laugh

a week? i didnt get a lot of gas, my AS and joint swelling just got worse and worse and it scared me so i stopped. i understand the concept of 'worse before better' , i mean u r stirring up all kinds of stuff when detoxing. But for me i felt like maybe my body wasnt eliminating 5he toxins very well. everyone is diff tho.

btw.. more gas would have been way more fun and entertaining smile

FOS = fructooligosaccharides

Quote:
Fructo-oligosaccharides are made up of plant sugars linked in chains. They are taken from asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, and soybeans, or produced in the laboratory. People use these sugars to make medicine.

Fructo-oligosaccharides are used for constipation, traveler's diarrhea, and high cholesterol levels.

Fructo-oligosaccharides are also used as prebiotics. Prebiotics act as food for “good” bacteria in the intestine. Don't confuse prebiotics with probiotics such as lactobacillus, bifidobacteria, and saccharomyces, which are live organisms that are good for health. People sometimes take probiotics by mouth to increase the number in their intestine.

In foods, fructo-oligosaccharides are used as a sweetener.

How does it work?
Fructo-oligosaccharides pass undigested into the colon where they increase bowel mass and promote growth of certain bacteria that are thought to be beneficial.

Quote:
FOS are also fermented by numerous bacterial species in the intestine, including Klebsiella, E. coli

FOS is put into cheap probiotics as food source for beneficial bacteria.... this is OK... fact that it is food source for Klebs as well is not so good (for us that respond to diet).

So if you go probiotics use, avoid brands with FOS.

Bad news for me, I just read the non medicinal ingredience and it has FOS in it. So everyone agrees that it would be stupid to start taking these capsules? I am getting better cutting back on starch and I would hate another "lifesucking, mood stealing, limiting my every move" AS flare up. Huge hugs to everyone wink

like many others, i flare from FOS. also, dunno if its related or not but inulin i cant do either. that makes asparagus, onions and a few others OUT. my reaction begins within an hour and boy oh boy it sucks. diff food affects diff body parts for me.

Yes FOS and Inulin are closely related. Can't remember what the exact difference was to be honest.. but yep they are similar.

I too had issues with both FOS and Inulin containing foods like onion and garlic. However I found that by gradually adding a tiny amount and doubling it every few days I was soon able to acclimatise my gut to foods that naturally contain it (mainly garlic and onion).

But for whatever reason I still had problems when FOS / Inulin had been added artificially - as in yoghurt and probiotics. I am guessing that the artificial kind is just too much for my body or ferments too easily?

Hi Nette,
I too am considering probiotics, but am hesitating for some of the reasons brought up here. Don't want to stir things up since I'm having such good success with the NSD.

I have been reading this blog by Dr. Art Ayers called Cooling Inflammation and he talks quite a bit about probiotics. Use the "search" feature in the upper left corner as his blog is not exactly the most user friendly. I'm still up in the air about probiotics. Hope you have some success! Maybe stick w/the NSD very strictly first before doing probiotics? Anyway, good luck!

thanks
