Yes the oil can interfere with the iodine test. Did you mix the iodine in?

What's on the ingredients list? Any of these additives (thickeners) are starchy:

In Japan, Kewpie is the dominant brand.
Mayo is used as often as Soy sauce here in Japan.
It tastes really good and doesn't contain starch.
But dont buy it if you are concerned about MSG.

I just looked a the ingredients for both Kraft and Best Foods (Hellmans) mayo and this is what I found...

Hellmans mayo
Soybean Oil, Water, Whole Eggs and Egg Yolks, Vinegar, Salt, Sugar, Lemon Juice, Natural Flavors, Calcium Disodium Edta (Used to Protect Quality).

Kraft mayo
Soybean Oil, Water, Eggs, Vinegar, Contains less than 2% of Egg Yolks, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Salt, Sugar, Dried Onion, Dried Garlic, Paprika, Natural Flavor, Calcium Disodium Edta As A Preservative.

They are almost exact so I can't figure out why they aren't listing any starch. I did notice that the light Kraft mayo listed modified food starch but not the regular. I am so disappointed that everyone says Kraft has starch in it because I have been eating it thinking it didn't. :-(
One more thing to cross off the list.

Hellman's/Best foods has Gluten Free on the label. As far as MSG, The only possible source of it would be from natural flavors and both brands have that. John, I'm going to look at Kraft labels more critically. I rarely buy anything processed enough for Kraft to make anyway.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you so much for all your input. I am testing Kraft mayo right now, to see if it changes the colour of the iodine. Last time I didn't think it did, but how much of a change is significant? Everyone seems to agree Hellman's is starch free and a better mayo, but there is some confusion about Kraft. I personally don't care what brand I get, as long as I can make my homemade caesar dressing still! My iodine test is now 10 minutes old, and there is no significant change(if anything the bright orange colour is faded a bit, but I'm assuming it soaks in after a while). I guess I am buying Hellman's from now on, just to be safe. Thank you all you lovely people, it always makes me smile when someone takes the time to answer questions; no one else cares about these little things that can impact us so much. cheerleader

The ingredients look fine, eat the Kraft Mayo. Unless you are super super sensitive in which case the garlic may give you trouble but otherwise should be sweet as. Perhaps others have had a bad experience with the Light version in the past or maybe they have changed the recipe over the years so it's now safe.

sorry i may have missed it somewhere but have u eaten the mayo and had a bad reaction? or just being cautious? IF u had/have a bad reaction could b from the sugar or even the vinegar/sugar combo. im verrrry sensitive to this combo but vinegar seems ok on its own.

Make your own if you have the time or use the Best Foods (Hellman's).

I recently purchased Kraft Fat-Free (knowing it would be starchy, but it is part of a longer story) and was so appalled that it was an amalgamation of CRAP that I returned it. Won't use it. I'll make my own fat-free mayo.

Kind Regards,
Jay

I found another brand of mayo that has no sugar and is made with apple cider vinegar....oh and no starch and no MSG. It is the Trader Joe's brand. Just thought I would let you all know in case you have a store near you and want to try it.
