Hey all, i've been shadowing this site for a while now, first time to post something. My hubby has had AS now for 12 years, he's 34 and his spine has started fusing. in constant pain. he's been on the AS London Diet for a couple of weeks now and WOW, his pain is considerably less!! only problem is that he's losing weight and can't really afford to, already skinny. anyone have any advice on how to prevent weight loss on this diet?

Hi Janine! I would suggest looking for higher calorie choices and simply forcing yourself to eat more. Avacados and some more meat might do the trick. In the past, I have simply ate three or four more bites past the full point and then in a couple of weeks your stomach stretches and then do it again.

Hey Craig, thanx so much for the advice, will definitely try it. have you had any experience with this diet? much to my amazment it looks like it might be helping with the pain.

Hey there,

Welcome to Kickas. I had issues with energy on diet early on... I am also skinny and had no weight to drop really.

Couple of my suggestions that helped me immensely
1. Nuts (walnuts) and raisons
2. 3 day apple diet... seems contrary, but this really helped me. I think the 3 day apple protocal (you can search it here or ask for more info) helps to clean up intestines and makes us more efficient with what we eat. This really surprised me how well helped.

I started diet 9 plus years ago and can still easily remember issues with energy.

Hope you find something that helps.

Hi Janine and Welcome to KA!

Are you the chief cook and bottle washer for your household??? grin The more information you have about doing this diet the easier it will be for both you and your hubby to stick to. Good on you for coming here to support your man.

I would highly recommend trawling back through this (diet) forum for loads of suggestions, as this is a subject that has been raised *many* times!

Some quick thoughts:

*add more fats - you get twice as many KJs per gram than protein. Butter on the veges, olive oil (and a little apple cider vinegar) on the salads, don't trim the meat of every skerrick of fat

*go read the 'recipe' section for some delicious high energy sweet treats made with almond meal or coconut flour - filling as they're high fibre too

*dried fruit and nut snacks

*full fat milk - many adults have switched to low fat these days...

I am very happy to learn of Your husband's success on LSD! CONGRATULATIONS to You both for sticking with it and making it work, and Thank You for the great support of our fellow spondy!

It is important to NEVER FORGET DESSERT! This is the reverse of The Atkins protocol, but if every meal can be rewarded with something sweet at the end--even good fruits--the weight will begin to stabilize. I lost a considerable amount at first, but regained all and more later on; it is not something to worry too much about unless Your husband is in a very physically-demanding job.

Hey all, thank you so much for all the info, will definitely make use of your suggestions. It means so much to be in contact with fellow spondys, we live in Namibia, Africa, so there's not a lot of info, doctors or support, in fact there's no support groups or Rheumys in Namibia. This site is a life-safer and gives us hope, makes one feel 'n little less alone. Thank you so much once again.

Wow! That must make it tough to get some of the stuff we suggested...if you need the name of websites that ship coconut flour, almond meal etc just ask... smile

All I know about Namibia is the 'red mud people' and the fact that they use a dried cow pat to the head to treat head lice! (read that and saw a pic in a National Geographic mag - suggested it once to my (then) 6 & 8 yos who were getting them repeatedly from school but for some reason they declined.... laugh2 )

Hey Louise, haha, your post was just so funny!! Quite right, we have the Ovahimba (red people) and yes they really do use Cow dung for lice. luckily we live in the main city, Windhoek. We actually have most necessities here, not much different from you guys except for the medical stuff. Eish, it's a pain really!! no Rheumies, no support groups, 1 back specialist in the whole country!! Lovley,peacefull place to live in, except if you have a serious illness like AS. But we're managing, do travel to South AFrica once in a while, but it's soooo far. Anyways, thanx for your post, you absolutely cheered up my day.

Hi,
Craig recommended avocado as it is high in calories, and he is right. I hope you can get fresh ripened avocado where you are, cause here in Canada we get fruit coming from the southern states and it is picked not ripe and cold stored(and it's starchy). Good for you, or should I say good for your husband, that you have taken matters into your own hands and helping him via the diet. I am also on a nsd and its tough, but I hear so many success stories,
