If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hello! I have just been diagnosed with AS in back and hips. I hit my right hand about a month ago, and it still hurts in my finger joints(middle and index) Now I am having sore muscles in right arm. Is it normal to have sore muscles too?

I have them. My arm muscles sometimes feel like I had been lifting weights for hours. They get very sore.

Hi Trishanne, Welcome to the forum. Having sore muscles anywhere on my body is normal for me. If I do anything too strenuous, my muscles will be sure to let me know about later too.
I would think it would be a normal AS symptom if you could describe it as anything like a muscle ache or body ache, even more so if you feel you have some AS activity going on in your arms too (shoulders, elbows, etc).
Assuming it is the AS causing it, either through fatigue, strain, high levels of inflammation, or even stress, I would recommend to keep lightly stretching your arms to help prevent it, along with lightly stretching the rest of your body. Some people with AS had to go as far as asking for muscle relaxers, so if it ever gets to that point, I'm sure your doctor would be help find something for you.
Take care, James

Thank you both. I thought I was going crazy!!(: And thanks for the warm welcome too(: I am 35 and just found out I have AS. I have had hip problems since I was 19. And now I have had back pain for about a year. At least waking up with pain. I see a rhumatologist in august. I had iritis over a month ago and thats how I found out. I never had heard of AS. But it explains a lot of what I have been going thru for years. And I am so happy I found this site. The stretching exercises I see on this site. Are they the ones everyone uses?
What doesn't kill me will make me stronger. Trish

And it seems a lot of these symptoms - back, hand, arm- are coming on quickly, within the last year. Does this happen to everyone?
Thanks Trish

Wow, I learned something new. I did not know muscle pain in your arms could be caused by AS. I always thought it was due to my fibromyalgia. Hmm, interesting, will bring it up with my doc.
I have had symptoms since I was 15, I am 30 now, but this last year has been a major decline in my health and mobility. I don't know if it is normal, but I know for me I experienced that.
Good luck! This is a great site full of amazing info and wonderful people.

Hi Trishanne, Are these the exercises you found? https://www.kickas.org/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showprofile&User=3652 . I don't know if they are recommended by Kickas.org, but I know they are the types of exercises given by physical therapists and posted by a physical therapist (who I think has AS too), and I'm sure they are here to give people an idea on what kinds of stretches there are to help keep us with AS flexible. Some of those exercises I do, but they were recommended to me when I visited physical therapy. Some of the exercises shown in those images I can't do too. If you decide to start any of them... go easy on your joints and don't force anything to move, because it's pretty easy to overdo it and end up hurting more. Take care, James.

some of my muscles get sore. like my back after sleeping at night. or my calves when my plantar fasciitis kicks in. or my hamstrings are always very tight and a bit sore. and of course there is the spasming butt.
i think the muscles are tight to try to compensate for the inflamed tendons and ligaments (at the entheses).
i do know a muscle relaxant has helped a lot. i take zanaflex just before bed each night. and during the day sometimes as needed.
