I grew up with saunas and always felt great afterwards. I now have a 1 person infra red sauna that I try to use a couple of times a week and I still get that nice limber(er) feeling after 55-60 minutes. smile
One thing, don't believe any hype about saunas cleaning toxins from your body by sweating because that's just a marketing scheme and it's a lie. 99.5% of toxins are gotten rid of through one's kidneys and liver.

they give me headaches if in there for more than a few minutes. heat in general does that to me, but that's just me.

I could never stay very long in them, but I have enjoyed saunas in the past. Had a friend who had a sauna as part of her business, so a group of us used to hire it out every now and then. Dad used to have one of those personal ones way back in the 1970's. He did use it a bit, but then gave up on it - possibly because of how much power it used.

i enjoy them but am worried:
- could they trigger a flair?
- i was told that heat is not good for inflammation--and inflammed we are.

what's your view?

I used to enjoy how much they relaxed my muscles, which then decreased the pain. But now they just worsen the nerve damage symptoms I got from Enbrel, as does being out on a hot day. Bummer!

AS symptoms started 1991. Official dx in 2006 with HLA-B27+, fused SIJ, bone spurs in back, extreme rib/hip pain, and other family with SpA. Started Enbrel in 2006 with good results, but stopped in 2010 due to nerve damage (MS) from it. Getting good results with no-starch diet since 2011.

Hi Mike,
I use sauna when I can. At home, I use a hot tub which I find very relaxing and excellent for stretch before physical activity. I think that any time one sits quietly for a while, the main cleansing is of the mind. The body will reflect that.

The heat makes me flare if I stay in too long.

yes, that is what i also am afraid.
common sense dictates that heat is not good for inflammation - but then, most of the comments on this thread and on some previous ones recommend sauna very much. i especially recall john supporting it big time.
