I almost drove off the road while on a business trip to Houston. An advertisement came on the radio talking about back pain and how the problem could be caused by an autoimmune disorder called an-kyl-os-ing spon-dyl-i-tis (the speaker said it very slowly and distinctly). They were directing the listeners to asbackpain.com to take a quiz about their back pain. This is the first time I've ever heard an ad for AS. Go figure...

P.S. I just checked out the site, and it's sponsored by Abbott, the maker of Humira.

AS symptoms started 1991. Official dx in 2006 with HLA-B27+, fused SIJ, bone spurs in back, extreme rib/hip pain, and other family with SpA. Started Enbrel in 2006 with good results, but stopped in 2010 due to nerve damage (MS) from it. Getting good results with no-starch diet since 2011.

Finally time someone said something about the name and what it is. The weirder the name the more people remember it for some reason.

I love that a pharma company has created the first national exposure for AS. There's a lovely symmetry about it. Even if people don't buy Humira, they'll do the back pain quiz and start thinking about it instead of living with it for years and telling themselves that it's normal, or not worth worrying about.

Warm hugs,

Kat
