Am I the only one who finds Christmas songs really depressing? I guess not the modern songs, but the classics, they just seem really depressing to me. Maybe I'm weird...

I find them some peaceful and serene: Silent Night, O Holy Night

Some joyous: Oh Come All Ye Faithful

That reminds me, I really like "little drummer boy" as done by Bowie and Bing Crosby.

I think that the actual Christmas songs can be somewhat "depressing" because they're not about gift giving or playing in snow but the birth of a savior who willingly dies a horrific death-kinda of somber when you think about it.

I like the song as well... I like many Christmas songs... really like the Mannheim Steamroller CDs as well.

I do not find Christmas music depressing at all... helps bring back good memories for me and I find it inspirational.

Hearing Johnny Mathis reminds me of my mother when I was young, she always put on his records at Christmas time... hearing O Tannebaum reminds me of my father. He never liked to sing, but for some reason liked to sing parts of that song.

Best to all,

Tim

First heard "In the Bleak Midwinter" only a few years ago - it wasn't at all appropriate when I lived in the southern hemisphere, but so emotive for the northern winter, and a lovely melody. Stille Nacht, sung in german is another.

My favourite Christmas song that really reflects the southern hemisphere summer Christmases of my childhood is "Te Harinui". This version is a bit faster than I've usually heard it, but still nice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o38596Rm24

I love lots of Christmas songs (listening on Pandora now), especially the religious ones. My favorite is O Holy Night and there isn't a close second.

You mentioned "O Holy Night" and Johnny Mathis.

"O Holy Night" sang by Johnny Mathis is my all time favorite christmas carol.

For me its: Johnny Mathis's, Brenda Lee's, and Elvis Presley's Christmas Albums that take me right back to Christmas as a kid growing up in the 60s/70s, and always remind me of my Dad.

Newer albums I like:

1. Amy Grant's "Home for Christmas"

2.Sting's "If On a Winter's Night"

(he claims its a Winter Solstice Album rather than a Christmas Album, but I like it, none-the-less)

Other songs: Brenda Lee's version of "Rockin Round the Christmas Tree"

and Karen Carpenter singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"

and pretty much anything by Johnny Mathis or Elvis Presley off those two Christmas albums.

I have the Time Life Christmas music CDs with that song... my son loves that song already... I just had to play it for him 3 times in a row now.
