For me, I do believe my health problems are due to my gut microbiome, but for me, I think it stems all the way back to birth.

As Nate said, its not just the microbes, but I do think it starts there.

Science is currently at the "what" stage, the correlations. Where science is moving is the "how" and "why" stage. Basically the molecular mechanisms of the disease process. This is an exciting time to be a student headed to graduate school!

And I don't think its just kleb. But they're still determining which microbes are in "healthy" guts vs which microbes are in people with various chronic illnesses.

For you, it could well be the illness that brought it on. For me, I think it goes beyond that.

For my daughter, I can tell you there were several instances of strange bugs before she started getting the joint pain (she was 10), but no pneumonia. Food poisoning at 3 (which I shared with her...thank you Oscar Mayer), a virus that had her temp so high I had to take her to e.r., and chickenpox despite having been immunized - but no clear proof of reactive arthritis, so no treatment with antibiotics. She always had a raspy voice, even when she was little, and a sort of chronic cough we always assumed were due to allergies.

I can tell you that it always astounds me how many kids in her age group around here have either AS or Crohn's. I realize the genetic factors play a huge roll, and a lot of the population are of Dutch descent. But when you live in a small town and know of at least 6 other kids in your close circle of friends, you start to see conspiracies everywhere. So it wouldn't surprise me if they prove it's a combination of genetic factors and certain viral or bacterial infections.

Hi Cemc,
Whilst Klebsiella pneumoniae is capable of causing pneumonia it rarely does so. Most bacterial pneumonias involve Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenza, Moraxella catarrhalis, Chlamydia species or Mycoplasma, or a combination of these.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is more commonly seen in urinary tract infections, and sometimes septicaemia.

Regards David.
