Im currently off Sulfasalazine because were planning on conceiving a baby sometime soon. I know it lowers fertility but Im a bit worried about it causing possible birth defects too. (read it here risks )

The sulfasalazine only worked well for me when I eat a good healthy diet, preferably low enough in starch. But I think I could eat plenty of potatoes but no wheat really.

I definitly got rid of any IBD like symptoms that I had from the sulfasalazine, it didnt matter what food I ate.

Hi John,
You may want to try eating your fruit, or dried fruit on an empty tummy rather than after a big meal. Seems to be something about animal fat (but not fish fat) - if their is anything with animal fat in my belly when I eat sweet foods then that *seems* to worsen the itchiness / or at least increase the sugar sensitivity issue.

Something I just observed in the last few days..

My fiancé's mother made a dish that I noticed *seems* to reduce the itch. It has a lot of onion and mashed garlic in it, as well as mashed fresh ginger, paprika, turmeric, msg, fish sauce .. and cooked in lots of oil until the onion is sweet and almost burnt.

lots of garlic & onion : both are rich in inulin (and sulfur too I think)

Hi Alinus,
Oh the old inulin FOS / Inulin issue eh? Actually I forgot to mention that, so thanks for the reminder. Yes, inulin used to bring on AS in me, although no overt digestive issues otherwise.

I was able to build tolerance to it by starting with a tiny tiny bit of garlic swallowed whole with water, and then increasing the amount a little each day. Didn't take too long. Of course each persons gut flora / immune reaction is a little different but may be worth a try for you (if you haven't already). Once I was able to eat garlic and onion it did make cooking quite a bit easier for me.

nop, the old Inulin FOS issue in ulcerative colitis, not in AS.
since the thread starter pointed that he has some colon problems,
he should avoid it in big quantities.

off course i was able too to build tolerance in time, but for people with gut problems there's a threeshold in qtty that you can's pass without being made to pay for it.

P.S. in my country the "throne" is the nickname for toilet smile so you can see the reaction - too much garlic - 2 days nonstop on the throne smile

OK thanks Alinus, and glad to hear you were able to improve tolerance to it. I was pretty happy when I could eat it again as it's so handy in soups, sauces, stirfry...

Update: Drinking the alkaline water (bicarb) on an empty tummy definitely works for me. Tried it last night, and the night before. So then here is what I think, and this is of course just for me and may or may not relate to you john

-- Cause: --
***** Fungal (not Candida as meth blue failed). Sugar makes it worse. Responds to Lufenuron, Castor oil (also anti fungal btw) & Curash.
***** The fact that drinking bicarb water (alkaline) on an empty tummy works indicates a) difficulty managing mucosa pH, and/or b) fungal/yeast infection (they hate alkaline salts)
*** Since MMS made this worse, then it is definitely related to gut / colon flora

Had no proctitis last night, this morning despite eating sweet trigger foods (which would normally be 100% reliable).

Well, I was reading this thread on night dehydration and found the links regarding resistant starch really interesting so I thought I would give it a go. Here is what I took:
* Konyaku noodle - looking for some resistant starch I pulled some of this noodle out of the cupboard, heated and ate it with veg yellow curry
* EFAs - following Dragon's suggestion I also had a big dose of EFAs (primrose oil, krill oil, and a little fish oil)
* Lufenuron - half a teaspoon of Lufenuron (anti fungal).

These didn't do anything noticeable for the night dehydration for which it was intended.. BUT my proctitis cleared (without needing to take a bicarb drink) and I slept like a baby too. Maybe it was just the Lufenuron that cleared the proctitis, as from my notes it has helped this quickly in the past. Woke up feeling energetic and refreshed, which is not the norm for me at all, was that the noodle?. This noodle is interesting - I don't react to it at all. The method of producing this is reminiscent of tofu and seems to remove all the starch.

Correction: I said I took primrose oil -- actually it was flaxseed oil. About 2 tablespoons of it mixed in yoghurt. Also I had a very low protein dinner that night, no animal meat, just some puff tofu in the curry.

I took the Lufenuron last night but the proctitis returned anyway. Maybe it was the Konyaku or the EFAs then (or maybe Lufenuron lost effectiveness / wasn't fully absorbed).

Proctitis seems to get worse in the middle of the night. I read that our mucosal pH becomes more acidic in the middle of the night, and so that fits with the bicarb drink thing which I do in the middle of the night to clear it.

(hope I'm not spamming you guys by continually updating my observations)
