Dear Bilko,

I was not suggesting that Dr Ebringer is some kind of shaman. I accept that his aims and methods are scientific. I was simply using the example of rainmakers to illustrate how open-ended the criteria are by which the diet is evaluated.

You have told us in previous posts how, on a couple of occasions, you have eaten substantial amounts of starch without experiencing any ill-effects. Once, if I remember rightly, was during jury service, once while on holiday. This is a good example of what I am talking about. Many would have predicted equally substantial flares. But the fact that you did not experience a flare is also seen as proof that the Diet works.

My guess is that you are experiencing natural remission which has nothing to do with the LSD and that you could eat as much starch as you liked if you wanted to. Why not try it? I would love to be proved wrong.

Hi Bilko,

Yes, I am aware of excessive carrot juice intake and have heard similar stories. A lady at work, her EX had his hands turn orange since he consumed 2 glasses a day. I only consumed glass every other day (2-3 a week). I would not consider this excessive and I had not pigmentation issues.

I had to drop the sulfasalazine due to the liver, elevated liver enzymes. Was not my choice..... the medication worked very well for me.

Take care,

Tim

Before i had ever heard of Prof Ebringer or the link between klebsiella, starch and hla b27,I figured out that my problems were in some way related to what I was eating. How so you might ask, simply by consuming ice cream .If I ate ice cream today, tomorrow I would have iritis. Then, I was of the notion that my problem was candida and would still have suspicions that it plays some part, as i can not eat any quantity of dried fruit, or even a large portion of melon would cause the iritis to flare up.This time last year I had a dreadful flare in my si joints,I found Kickas and the London Diet, HIP HIP HOORAY, in 3 days,I was able to set aside my 80 year old mothers walking stick, and move about more or less normally free from pain. I still continued to have niggling pains in my left si but on going dairy free as well, was normal until about 3/4 weeks ago, when I think a combination of milky coffee and too much dried fruit eaten too many times in close proximity started a flare in aforementioned si joint and also iritis.A 3 day apple diet and strict nsd has me nearly back to normal. Before I was even diagnosed with AS a very good friend, who is best described as a healthy eating/ living fanatic and who is also a clinical bio chemist in a large hospital told me my problem was that I had a leaky gut .I think that the accounts of some individuals, who after some time adhereing to the nsd can tolerate starch are those who have been fortunate enough to have the guts heal or become more impermeable to the bacteria or fragments of food that wreak so much havoc on our bodies.Up to now I have concentrated my efforts on the diet and Ebringers ideas of not feeding the little monsters and am gradually improving in health. I would like to concentrate more now on improving the health of my GI tract. Recently I have begun to eat large quantities of garlic raw and also, picking up a tip from Ozlion I think, using enteric coated garlic. It is still very early days to notice any effect. Finally my AS kicking brethren ,my job often takes me into medical practioners homes to work,If I get the opportunity I discuss the problem. Invariably I have been encouraged by them to try to maintain my health with the diet as they all agree that nsaids and pain killers and dmards all bring more problems in the long term. Jonathan.

Hear, Hear, Jonathon!!

I LOVE the way this diet makes me feel, and know that my overall health has benefitted also. If the pharmaceutical companies could trap the essence of the diet and churn it out in large quantities in the form of a pill so they get a great big fat profit (i.e. ditto for most of the meds they churn out) I bet they'd be falling over themselves to do it.

But...can't help thinking they'd have to shove a few side-effects in there somewhere, as there can't be that many (or any) meds out there that haven't got a sizeable list of side-effects.

And even if they could capture it, I wouldn't take it - I've done my own personal research and know it works for me.

It costs me nothing and there's no negatives about it. What more could I ask for?? Cynics can line up and show me as many cynical bits of paper as they like, nothing's going to stop me doing this simple, effective, healthy way of life.

ISN'T IT GREAT???!!!!

Take care,

Jan
