I posted this as a reply to another persons post, however I wanted to post it so more people could see it. This was just quickly jotted down so my apologies for poor writing style etc.
I seldom post, however I see this repeatedly being posted, people speaking of HLA-B27 in horror as if there was something bad about this gene. Less than 10% of people with HLA-B27 get AS. However HLA-B27 is a powerful and positive gift to give your future descendents. People with HLA-B27 exhibit a powerful resistance to many horrible and deadly diseases, including AIDS and Hepatitis, as well as other current and even more importantly for your descendents possible future emerging contagious diseases.
Before there were any treatments for AIDS and by the time people were being diagnosed most people succumbed in less than 5 years. However the medical community discovered that there were certain outliers. A tiny percentage of people were living 17 years and longer without medical treatment. Researchers invested tremendous effort and money to find the reason certain people showed this resistance. They found out the sole reason was that the people who were long lifers were HLA-B27 positive. This was the only difference.
The resistance provided by HLA-B27+ could in a future disease plagued world provide enough resistance to allow your descendents time to procreate and pass on your genetic pool.
