I have had problems on and off for years - it's hard to tell if eating low starch has made it worse or was getting worse anyway along with my AS?

For me, my daily kiwifruit has been my "maintenance treatment" for years. I am almost guaranteed to have constipation if I miss it. I can't digest cabbage or large quantities of salad etc. I also eat bio yoghurt every day, which helps my digestive system generally.

When that isn't enough, I mix the contents of a magnesium capsule (I can't swallow capsules and all the magnesium tablets were too big for me too) with some yoghurt in the evening and that does the trick. It also helps with muscle cramps and sleep etc. The one I take says it is natural marine magnesium and is magnesium oxide free and contains no added wheat, gluten, corn, yeast, milk, artificial flavours or preservatives.
