I think you meant this one to go higher up the thread! I agree that the issue of the empirical success of the diet can be separated from the molecular mimicry theory. Diet is not a particularly close test of the theory, since many variables are affected by diet. There is pretty widespread agreement that gut bacteria are important in the pathogenesis of AS, and diet may affect the presnce and growth of a number of microorganisms in the gut without being limited to a particular bacterial species. Additionally there is the question of gluten, which has been looked at in a different thread.
