I have just really screwed up . . . and I'm trying to remedy things, but in the meantime, I'm aching and hurting. This is the worst I've been since last May! At that time, I was on double Vioxx, but then I found the diet and ditched the medicine.

Some of you may have noticed in other posts that I've stated that I became a bit lax with the diet this spring. At first, I seemed to be getting away with it, but eventually stiffness and an ache here and an ache there began to grow. During the past few weeks, I've been trying to stick to the diet again (and I'm including healing foods and supplements like sour cherry juice, aloe, omega 3's), but the ball was already rolling, and this week, I'm in an all out flare. My entire spine, my hips, my shoulders, my big right toe, my wrists . . . and it's so frustrating because there is no good reason to let this happen to myself. I feel like I'm 74 instead of 44. And, I know that when I stick to the diet, I have NO arthritic symptoms. It's still amazing to me, but it's true!! I think that when I'm feeling so good, it's actually easy to forget how awful AS can feel. I even begin to wonder if people will think I've made it up that I have an illness at all! That's how well the diet works for me.

Soooo, I'm really thinking that I need to be doing an apple fast and maybe even some no food fasting. Only, I really do not enjoy either one and my discipline with food in general (even NSD foods) has been rather poor lately. I'm sure that part of my problem is related to overeating. That, too, is a cycle that I need and want to break.

If my fellow NSDers could send positive energy, prayers, thoughts, (whatever suits you),etc. for discipline and healing while I am fasting, I would be grateful. I need to do something that will break this momentum of pain and get me back on track in every way.

Thanks so much for all of you on this forum who are supportive. I like the main forum a lot, too, but I know that you NSDers are especially sympathetic to the diet issues.

Paula

Prayers? I would recommend a good beating and scourging with birch twigs in a Russian steam bath for your punishment. A healthier alternative to eating starch.

Paula,
For me and for others too (I remember our new administrator having a hard times in the past) the apple fast has been the life saver in these circumstances. Especially if you have troubles with overeating an apple fast can set back te clock cause after all the hungry feelings you have had then it is easier to stick to eating all the wonderfull things on LSD/NSD in a moderate way. Hope you can make it!! I'm sure Bilko will be able to start and fill a new thread on his thoughts on discipline.

Oh Paula, Paula, what's a girl to do? You've learned so much and been an inspiration to more than you know. I have every confidendence that you'll be back on track before the weekend's out. If this silly post gets you past one more minute of temptation, my job's done.

I still struggle but when in great distress even with the eye business, I fall back on the fast. Have been uveitis free for almost a year now.

You can do it.

Hi Klem,

THANKS for your encouraging words, and yes, there are many, many supportive people on the main forum, too -- whether they do the NSD or not. I guess I just didn't want to open the proverbial can of worms again on that forum. The NSD always seems to end up being a hot issue there, and I didn't want my thread to become a debate on the merits of the NSD.

Just knowing that I've posted this and others are thinking of me is giving me resolve and strength.

Hugs! Paula

Although my skin doesn't heal so quickly these days, and if it became infected . . . ewwww . . . but probably, you're still right . . . a better alternative than eating starch!

Thanks for helping to keep me in line, Bilko!! I'll remember you recommendation next time I'm tempted.

Paula

Hi Paula,
The fast sounds like a great idea. I've been thinking of doing one myself.

Sending you thoughts, prayers, and of course those mandatory birch twig whippings for your strength, motivation, and mental peace.

Hi Gerard,

Yes, I think your right -- my hope is that the apple fast will break the negative cycle in which I've been and will give me a fresh start with the NSD.

Thanks for your good words! I always appreciate your postings! Paula

Thanks, Beth!

By the way, where in MD do you live? I lived in Easton on the Eastern Shore for 6 years (1985-91). I loved it there, and was really sad when we left for my husband to work on his Ph.D (but that ended up being a great place and phase of life, too). Anyway, I miss the tidal waterways, blue crabs (yum, yum, yum -- and they're NSD safe!!!!!), the Oxford ferry ride, St. Michaels, boat rides, etc. We're planning to spend a week at Chincoteague and Assateague Islands in July (the VA part of the Eastern Shore) and will be driving through Easton to get there. It's a long drive from here, though -- we're dividing it into 2 days of travelling.

I also have relatives in the Frostburg and Lonaconing/Bloomington areas -- my parents grew up there. Of course, that's all the way on the other side of MD!

Thanks again for your well wishes! Paula

Hi Paula,

I live in Frederick, MD, about halfway between Easton and Frostburg. I agree with you about Easton, what a beautiful and peaceful place. We have been talking about visiting St. Michael this summer too, but haven't made any plans as yet.

Unfortunately I like my crabs picked and sterilized , even though I grew up here I just can't handle the hammering, oozing and picking process!
