HI,

I had some weight problems in last two years, I was really slim, and looking like ghost, then I checked my bowel, and the upper part (have no english word).
So they told me that I have UC with AS as well, told me that is commont with all the meds I have been taking.
They gave me some more pills for intestials (god hope it is a right word), and I finnaly got some weight up.

Look healthy and feel as well

hope you will find the answers you are looking for here on this site

Hi Hank and welcome to KA!

Right now, at something like 5'9", I'm at 150lbs. However, a couple of years ago, I was at 132lbs., which is far too light for my height and body structure. I was eating and eating healthily, but I kept losing weight. Hell, I was never that light even in my 20s when I was pulling 18 hours a day, six days a week, and taking 4 or 5 dance classes a week. Let's just say that I looked sick at 132lbs and people were very worried about me.

The main thing that changed was that my uncontrolled flare started to become controlled. I seem to lose weight at the drop of a hat when my AS is flaring. I haven't changed my eating habits all that much since then and had already come off of wheat and cow dairy. So, I figure that for me, it's completely disease activity related. In fact, since going on Remicade last summer, I've gained 10lbs. Went up to 157/8lbs. Lost 8lbs during my recent show (loss of muscle tone had something to do with that, and I tend not to eat properly when I'm in a show - something about not having time between work, driving to the theatre, getting ready for the show and then performing until 10 or 11 in the evening - no time for a proper meal).

Anyway, 150lbs is right where my GP wants me to be, so it's all good.

I hope you find something that helps you gain some weight in a healthy way. Dear George is our resident expert on that.

Hugs,

Kat

WELCOME, hank2006:

I would bet that, for a variety of reasons, the weight distribution of the AS population is strongly bimodal: Two groups with one over average and one below average. It is said that people with AS tend to lose weight, but some are also prone to autoimmune thyroiditis but most of the weight is due to drugs: NSAIDs make us eat more and steroids cause us to retain weight.

The solution for your underweight issue is not drugs, however, the iritis should be addressed and enteric-coated sulfasalazine, in addition to dietary starch reduction can help with this very much.

Taking proper supplements at key times will help you to put weight on, also. VitB complex about two hours before eating--having access to buffet or large meal, and also the reverse of the Atkins regimen only in that eating a sweet dessert immediately after a meal can help to trigger increased "storage."

It is possible to eliminate starches and still gain weight, but it requires timing with appropriate substitutions.

I hope that you can get the iritis under control--this is a terrible problem in AS, but the SZ has demonstrated and provable anti-iritis activity, and is also very effective against AS as an adjunct with diet,

Best to You,

John

Hey, George!

Great to hear that you have been doing so well and have also found a product that finally works. We sure had some frustrating times and serious worries about your situation. How's the Farabloc working by now?

I'm interested in this Mammoth 2500 supplement.
It says it has 150g carbs from maltodextrin. Isn't maltodextrin a complex carb made from corn starch?
Is it NSD safe?
