I think this is actually a more an "odd things you've done recently" type thread than a diet suggestion. Even though I'm pretty happy with what I've noticed so far, I would never go as far as recommend to someone that they do what I've been doing (and that's pretty much universal, going far beyond the scope of this post). So - I read somewhere, last week, that raw garlic promotes intestinal health, helps regulate stomach bacteria, and is an relatively potent antibiotic. The diet I've put myself on calls for intestinal health, and the other things seems like they'd help to, so I gave it shot and started eating 1 whole clove of garlic a day.

And it's a pretty foul experience - chewing garlic. It's like that cough syrup when you were a kid. No matter how hard you tried, you never got it all down on the first try, and the more you took - the worse the experience was. The strategy is all at once and suffer hard and quick or drag it out and suffer slowly.

That said, the following things have happened in the last week since I started (that appear at least loosely related to the garlic):

1) The flareup that I was in the midst of has been noticeably reduced in severity. No kidding here. I'm sure the other things on my diet have helped, but there's a noticeable drop in pain within minutes eating the garlic, and there's been progressive drop in severity since I started.
2) I have not been bitten by a mosquito or flea. Not one.
3) My wife refuses to kiss me.
4) Our dogs look puzzled at first when they're around me.
5) Certain <intentionally vague>things </intentionally vague> smell like garlic...

I feel incredibly odd asking this question - but has anyone else tried eating (I mean really chewing up) raw garlic cloves? What was your (not initial) impression?

If I were forced to stretch a theory out of this - I'd say that it's a combination of antibiotics/antifungals reducing the crazyness in my gut (and thereby limiting the release of antibodies) and the general anti-inflammatory nature of garlic. I might also surmise that my diet (which is focusing on bone strength and immune system boosting) also may have amplified these effects.

We'll see where I am after two weeks...if I can get that far. At some point - I'll probably credit the diet and ditch the garlic, but I'll be damned if that stuff wasn't like a shot of pain killers

My dad used to eat raw garlic and you couldn't even go near the guy he smelled so bad. I know he was eating it cause he said it's good for you. Other than that I don't remember him saying anything else about it. I will ask him next time I talk to him and let you know.

Hey,

I read several articles/books that state garlic is the best natural antibiotic. It has so many acting agents that bacteria can not develop a resistence. I have not read that it is specifically good for kp, but I know that it is good for candida and has gotten me out of a few flares resulting from that (yes I would take it raw as well).

Loved the list... #3 and #4 had me rolling. Now being married... wife does not like me eating garlic.

Hi There. Im from Austin as well, your comment about flies caught my attention. As you know, they have exploded with the rain and our dogs are suffering with no end in sight.
I am going to grind up some garlic and sprinkle it on their
food. Might as well crunch on some myself. eech..

I did some research and discovered that a chemical called allicin is released from Garlic when it is crushed. It's not present in Garlic, but rather is created by the destruction of the cell walls. Go figure. This chemical has strong antibiotic and antifungal properties. It turns out that garlic was used as a topical antibacterial in WWI & WWII to prevent gangrene.

There's some anecdotal evidence suggesting that garlic helps prevent cholesterol build up, helps prevent cancer (but what doesn't these days, right?), and boosts the immune system,

It also acts a blood thinner, which is one of the thing NSAIDS do.

Too much raw garlic can actually damage the intestines. I don't know how much too much is, but one clove sure feels like enough

Hi, llthomps:

I did a 6-day fast followed by almost a monodiet of garlic many years ago. It was a lonely experience, but worth it. Other ASers have reported that taking a 'tooth' of garlic daily helped reduce their symptoms. The best way to take the garlic is to dice it raw, somewhat fine, then coat with olive oil and put in freezer and it can even be sort of shaped into pill-like forms on the ends of popcicle sticks and downed quickly that way (the olive oil really helps). Not as much trouble with the bad breath (--is better than no breath at all) that way.

Does the expression on the dogs' faces mean that they could be blamed for the intentionally vage odorous things? Just the garlic doin' its job.

You could get some DMSO and put some on your hand then touch your wife; she may not notice the garlic so much then...

Mosquitoes don't like Bcomplex, also. I don't know about fleas in this regard; I would even use chemical means to control them and I HATE to spray for any reason, but I really HATE FLEAS.

Regards,
John

If you want to avoid the stinkiness associated with eating garlic but still get the benefits.....

Someone here in the past used to eat garlic cloves WHOLE - swallow them whole like a pill with a glass of ICED water (don't know why but it must be icy cold). Apparently that stops the stinkiness escaping....might be worth a try especially if you are fond of your wife's kisses as most men are.

My hubby has also found benefits in eating raw garlic (cooked garlic flares him up as the starch is released when it's cooked).

My experience with garlic is that it keeps many microorganisms at bay, but it cannot be reduced in its smell if it is taken in bulk, because just like fenugrik, it oozes out of one's entire skin - not just the mouth...

I found your posting very instersting because I was already investigating this family of vegetables. Since a long time, I've noticed that after some meals I was feeling as good as if I took the most powerful NSAIDs. After observation, I noticed that it was happening after eating meals with raw onions. So I started my investigation. In summary, I get my best results with eating a big shallot ( green onion ) on an empty stomach, just before going to bed. I wake up as in my best days each time, no exception. I'm doing that since 3 weeks now and you can't imagine how much my rough 'AS' nights transformed into regenerating sleep. Eating 3/4 of a yellow onion does the trick even better, but is a little rough to eat and is socially incomodating! After doing some research on the internet to determine which compound is responsible for those benefits, here are the candidates I found :

Quercetin
Magnesium
Potassium
Vitamin C

I still have to determine which one is the one or if they are all necessary to do the job.
Some experience to share on that, anyone ?

Very interesting -

I looked up onions on the trusty old wikipedia and returned this:

Quote:

Evidence suggests that onions may be effective against the common cold, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and other diseases. They contain anti-inflammatory, anticholesterol, anticancer, and antioxidant components such as quercetin.
